I doubt Em's any more homophobic than you or me.. like I said he's just playing the part to piss people off. And we've had this conversation before but it's not about what's being said, but the intent. I just want to make sure when you say "Em was definitely homophobic early on" you mean Em didn't like homosexuals as opposed to Em said he hated fags.

The only lines I think you can argue are necessarily homophobic are his "you're gay" lines in diss tracks.

But these were all parody lines. And, you know...even Kid Twist has a couple gay bashing lines in his battles. This is just non-homophobic people pandering to a homophobic subculture. Kid Twist only ever did it when he had no other angles.

Eminem's never actually said anything that would indicate he doesn't like homosexuals. He talks about raping lesbians, of course...but he also talks about raping himself ("molested myself and got convicted")...it's equal-opportunity offending, and all done for entertainment/shock.

Doing racist shock value would have been the kiss of death in rap music. Eminem's not a moron. His priority was always to be accepted by other rappers, and if he'd said "n-gger," he'd have been screwed.

Not to mention, rap has always been seen as "black music," not "gay music," and he didn't want to bite the hand that feeds him.

But calling Eminem homophobic because of lines that were clearly not meant to be taken seriously? Come on.

Does Eminem hate people with Parkinsons because he makes fun of Michael J Fox all the time? Does he hate quadriplegics because he dissed Christopher Reeve?

Yeah, I've been over this and covered the fact it would be stupid to 'diss' black people - the same way a worker doesn't make a joke at his boss's expense.

But I feel (maybe unjustifiably) that Em wouldn't be alright with making equivalent "racist black jokes", even if it wasn't biting the hand that feeds him.

Of course we'll never know if the reason he didn't "shock" black people was solely because it would have been a stupid career move or that he felt, to an extent, that it's not okay to say those things.

I think it's a reasonable inference to think Eminem would've been homophobic - based on his generation and where he's from. But probably not enough to judge someone, as most people in the 90's in America would have been to an extent .

Eh, I dunno about that. Most of the real homophobia in the United States is in the rural areas. The "Bible belt" in the South, in particular. "The lawd says if a man lies with another man as if he were a woman, it's an abomination. It's in the Bah-bul...are you questionin da Bah-bul?"

In the urban areas of the US, you'll find plenty of people walking around going, "faggot, faggot, fag, fag, faggot," but most of those people don't actually care one way or another about gay people...it's just slang. And homosexuality is pretty much all out in the open in those areas...drag queens walking up and down the streets, etc.

Eminem's from the urban subculture in a northern state. Well, at least he associates with people from there, and hung around those types of areas. And like most people from those types of areas, he identifies with leftism/liberalism.

And remember, Eminem did the "Oh, Foolish Pride" thing once, too. I don't think that means he was ever racist.
