What divides "old Em" from "new Em"?

Postby Blu » Feb 24th, '13, 03:44

Now, just to clarify, I don't like using the terms "old Em" and "new Em," mostly because I think it's stupid and there should be no dividing line.

BUT, news is scarce so I figured we could have some discussion going.

These terms are commonly brought up whenever people discuss Eminem's music. So, what exactly divides Em in these two terms? In other words, what makes "old Em", old Em? And what makes "new Em", new Em?

Is it the use of drugs? Is it the blonde hair? Is it the writing style? Is it because Eminem now acts like a much more mature adult that isn't running around screaming "fuck you"?

Just to add to the topic, I'll give my two cents. There is a dividing line. I believe the dividing line is the writing style. Eminem's always been a technical artist, he's always focused on the rhymes. However, pre-hiatus, Eminem's words always flowed so smoothly; you wouldn't even notice a rhyme when he rapped e.g. "I'm Back".

Now, he's more focused on making it clear that he's rhyming five syllables at once; purposely bending words and acting much more...nerdy.

Just something I've noticed. Thoughts?

Like a dividing line? The 'line' would probably be placed somewhere between Encore and Relapse.

I think the Despicable freestyle speaks volumes. The first time I heard it, I could tell when it was from just by the sound of his voice and the energy in it. Not saying that it changed there, but that was a big "whoa.. there's a change" moment for me.

Just his overall personality, he's a more relaxed/secure person now and it shows in his music

InsaneTRex94 wrote:As a person, I think almost everything has changed from when he was "old Em". It's mainly because he's grown up. He's still a child at heart, it's very visible with the stupid shit he does, like on the BME live stream...but he's learned how to behave in public a lot better. That Eminem meets Eminem youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz7G53AsEyY) is a good example.

Agreed.

Now, for the million-dollar question: if "new Em" acted like "old Em," would that mean that "new Em" is still "old Em?"

No, that would mean that he is trying to be his old self to please us, and maybe him... which would just be really awkward.

Was it a good or bad change for you?

Very good!

I've always enjoyed what he has to say.. but the energy he has now is insane. In an article I recently read, they described his on-stage presence as "the intensity of a boxer" and I thought that was perfect. I've never seen him live, only youtube and DVD performances but the performances from the Recovery Tour vs his others, were a whole new level.

99-07 Old Em | 08-present New Em. Simple

No just kidding, it's the look mainly with people. The blonde hair Em was on drugs. That's the "old" Em. The brown/black hair is sober which is the recovered or "new" Em

I don't do the "Old Em", "New Em" thing. He's had a bunch of phases.

Like, prior to 8-Mile Em was pretty much the same. That's like "Eminem Classic" or something. It's how he debut, and he stayed like that until around 2003-ish. Then you get into "Gangster Em", which sort of morphed into "Pill-Zombie Eminem" around Re-Up. Then he vanished, and came back as the current Eminem that just seems like a regular guy.

the degree of controversy.

i think from the release of encore, onward, he's been less politically charged.
