Rhymes Em stole?

Postby Blu » Feb 27th, '13, 09:49

I just noticed one while I was listening to some Dre:
King T wrote:I'm coming "Straight Outta Compton" with a loose cannon
Smoke big green, call it Bruce Banner

Eminem wrote:Fuck it I'm a loose cannon, Bruce Banner's back in the booth

I wouldn't say that's a bite...

Loose Cannon and Bruce Banner is the kind of thing Em would rhyme, not only for the kind of half-rhyme aspect of the second words in each phrase but also the comic-book and crazy elements.

Em's paid a lot of homage, but it's obvious homage that he makes clear with some kind of take-off or mirroring of the structure such as most of his diss tracks, like "Can-I-Bitch" / Slick Rick, and the chorus of "The Way I Am" and Rakim's song, things like that.

One thing which Em said AFTER Cage though which lends a little more credence to the idea Em was hip to Cage and somewhat ripped him was this line:

"You bitches get a hysterectomy disrespecting me"

BUT, it may have been one of those common 90s ideas such as 'die hard like Bruce Willis' ( :facepalm at people like Wayne and Minaj saying shit like that in the late 00s lmao, shows how far behind they actually are). But, I'm not sure, the line is identical and a few years apart so, it's suspect.

Not a rhyme but did anyone catch that Eminem basically bit his line "Hear this middle finger...etc" from The Breakfast Club? Maybe it was homage?

Come on…so it's acceptable for other rappers to bite Eminem but Eminem cannot bite any other rappers, even though I've posted a clear example of him biting King T. I've never heard the Bruce Banner/Loose cannon rhyme before.

There is a huge thread about "rhymes rappers bit from Em". Or something like that.

But the line is different...

I don't think you can say that line is a bite lol... he may have got the idea from there, he may not have. But considering Eminem as an artist... he's used the phrase loose cannon a few times, and that's his entire character, and Bruce Banner was bound to come up eventually plus he mentions other comic book characters on Recovery, so considering all that; it ain't very far-fetched for it to be from his head.

If the line was exact, yeah, but it ain't, or even close really.

^ Blu, the point is that it's unclear whether or not he actually bit the line. Since comic book references and the term "loose cannon" appear frequently throughout his catalog, it's hard to really tell.

All biting aside though, I love that homage he gave to Redman--which was about biting his shit specifically--in "Low, Down, Dirty".

[Redman Sample] I'm low down and dirty, but not ashamed
[Eminem] I'm low down and I'm shifty!
And if you hear a man that sounds like me smack'em,
Then ask him where the fuck did he get his damn raps from

That last line being a direct quote from a Redman song.
"America...just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns and no qualms about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable" — Hunter S. Thompson

"Poison the well, your enemies are thirsty!" — Modest Mouse

But what constitutes a "bite?" Because, in this thread by EminemInsider, he's pointing out rhymes that other rappers used in their songs, and he called that "biting."

viewtopic.php?f=57&t=150432

So, if Nas uses the "Fake ID/HIV" rhyme scheme in his lyrics, it's a bite. But if Eminem (who appeared on the same album as King T) uses the "Loose cannon/Bruce Banner" rhyme scheme in "Cold Wind Blows", it's not a bite?

And just because he often references superheroes and being a "loose cannon," suddenly Eminem gets a free pass?

It's all about intent.

If he had heard that line, and was like "man, I like that, I'm going to steal it" that would be biting. Is that what happened? Possibly. It's impossible to tell, and that's why you have to look at the rest of his songs to view this within context.

The fact is that line is the type of rhyme Eminem would make. "Loose Cannon" coupled with the only comic book character that rhymed with it on a braggadocio track? Does that prove that he wasn't biting? No, it doesn't. But since there's no way to prove intent, and that is the type of line that Eminem would write, it doesn't make sense to jump to the conclusion that he stole it.

He could have, sure. Since coincidences happen though, I'm not sure why Eminem would bite a rhyme from a song 10 years prior when he was arguably at the peak of his rhyming game in 2009 anyway. That's the point.

People who rhyme words for a living are probably gonna end up rhyming the same words along the line somewhere.

"Razor blade" rhymes with "shave your legs". Maybe I want to say:

With a razor blade, I might just shave your legs and make you bleed,
So stay away because I'm crazy, 'kay?! Can't you see?!

in a rap.

Eminem said something similar on Guilty Conscience, but not the same thing.

Tell her you need a place to stay
You'll be safe for days if you shave your legs with Renee's razor blade

Did I bite him? No. I just rhymed something that he rhymed, subconsciously (it was conscious for the example, obviously).

It's not a ridiculous thing lol.

I understand that. People are constantly trying to rhyme new words that they think haven't been rhymed already. It's common. But, that just means no rapper has ever bit another rapper, which is b.s. considering Eminem must have heard that rhyme and decided to jot it down. But, like Abram said, there's no way of telling unless Eminem came out and told us himself.

Em pays homage this way, he's done it a lot of times. In this case it's pretty normal 'cuz EM loves that generation of rappers & when EM got signed to Aftermath, King T was huge on the West Coast & always affiliated to Aftermath, even signed as well at some point. King T introduced Xzibit & then X was always affiliated to Dre too & became great friends with EM. Before Interscope stopped it, Dre & EM joined King T's ''Likwid Crew'' for a little while & there was talks about all stars album. The one I still dream about like nearly 15 years later.

Why must he have :confusion:

Em is a comic book geek himself, and he mentions OTHER comic book characters quite a few times on Recovery, that - along with the fact he's constantly referring to himself as crazy / nuts /a loose cannon ETC. - and he also writes phrases and names out and sees what he can rhyme with them... since he mentions comic book characters a lot... Bruce Banner... 'lose cannon' is pretty obvious.

I don't think he'd bother intentionally biting a single rhyme, lmao. A rhyme belongs to no one too, it's about the line itself - the way it's put together. If he said the exact line you quoted, that'd be a bite.

Lol...do you not realize that whole "he's paying homage" argument is complete bullshit?

(Role Model, 1999)
Eminem wrote:I came to the club drunk with a fake ID
Don't you want to grow up to be just like me
I've been with ten women who got HIV

(I Can, 2002)
Nas wrote:As cute as can be, up in the club with fake ID
Careful, 'fore you meet a man with HIV

That is considered 'biting,' but when it's the other way around...

(Some L.A. Niggaz, 1999)
King T wrote:I'm coming "Straight Outta Compton" with a loose cannon
Smoke big green, call it Bruce Banner

(Cold Wind Blows, 2010)
Eminem wrote:Fuck it I'm a loose cannon, Bruce Banner's back in the booth

suddenly, it's not 'biting,' but 'paying homage?'

I'm telling you that's homage, I'm sure about it... they were on the same roster & would have worked together but Jimmy stopped it 'cuz him & Dre were backing off outta Death Row & Suge wasn't happy about it, the new Death Row were coming with the most disrespecting stuff at Dre & EM but Interscope wouldn't let nobody going back at them 'cuz it would have got somebody killed. King T wouldn't back off though as his roster was crazy & most of them were/are bad asses & real gangsters so Dre & Em had to back off & shy aways from the ''Liwkid Crew''. But Dre, King T & Xzibit were really close & EM came into the same circle.
