I dont even know what yelawolf's or SH's albums are called and i dont know anyone who have ever even heard of them
LOL
E:
And also i dont see the point of marketing ( i dont know anything about it tbh, it's rather dull). Why not just put few songs on the radio and on some music channels and just hope people like it. I doubt many listen to music they dont like just coz the marketing is so good. I have never been affected by marketing, i search for rappers i want to listen, they dont come to me.
Cause you'll never take my pride from me

momentsgolden wrote:Then, on this INSANE notion that yelawolf is NOT marketable. LMFAO!! Yelawolf is a skater, white, rapper from the south who loves big cars and drinkin. ANY ONE of those things could make him famous NOW lol. The world is jus a web of niches and there is no "definition" of whats marketable of not.

Subject-matter has little to do with how marketable an artist is. Eminem didn't become famous because of his rhymes describing his assault fantasies and raping Jennifer Lopez. Do you think a teenage girl actually enjoys listening to that type of music? When MMLP was first released, do you think all the girl fans were listening to his shit because of lines like, "I'm sorry Puff, but I don't give a fuck if this chick was my own mother, I'd still fuck her with no rubber and cum inside her..."

No, they liked him because of things like this:
Image
That's "cute," "hot," "adorable," "handsome," to the teenage girls who are fans. That's what they were thinking about while listening to his music.

It's all about personality, appearance, attitude. Throw music out the window for a second when you're discussing marketability. That whole "just don't give a fuck" attitude helped Eminem attract fans. It's what made him so big. They had just lost 2Pac, an artist that constantly advocated not giving a fuck. It was the perfect time for Eminem to come out. Shit, Dre is a genius.

Lil Wayne's music is absolute shit to most, but the guy is still marketable. Wanna know why? Because teenage girls think this is hot, and all the teenage boys want to imitate it:
Image
Joint in hand, other hand forming a gun placed against his temple, with tattoos covering his body. That's "thug." That's "cool."

I have no clue about Yelawolf's personality or attitude, but his white trash look does not work...at all. Not since Eminem broke out, at least. His voice as well...Jesus, his fucking VOICE. I think that's the main thing that turns people away from his music.

That Watsky rapper that Solace made a thread about looks like a complete cornball, and because of that I probably won't listen to his music. Even if it's the best material ever, I'll unfortunately have to miss out because his voice + appearance just doesn't appeal to me.

It all comes down to appearance, man. A lot of people see Hopsin and they think, "fucking cornball," and because of that they turn his music down and go listen to whoever actually looks and sounds "cool."

It played a major part in Kendrick becoming famous. He's not jumping in front of the camera, annoying the shit out of the listener, or wearing dumb contacts, he's just a black guy with an OK voice. They saw him, decided to listen, and got hooked on his music.

+1 for super long post

bigray wrote:Have you not seen Eminem's concerts with thousands of females singing EM's lyrics along with him? If a female or male focuses on a few lines in an album and that ruins it for them, that is they're own fault and the should never pick up an album again.

I didn't say that those lines ruin the album for the women, I was saying those aren't the lines that appeal to them. What most likely happened is that a girl saw one of Eminem's singles playing on T.V. - The Real Slim Shady, for example - they figured he was a goofy artist and decided to buy his album in hopes of hearing more songs like TRSS. Of course, they end up listening to the songs you can relate to or aren't as explicit. I'm not saying this applies to every girl on the planet, but the majority.

And besides, the girls that went to Eminem's older concerts would always flash their tits in hopes of catching his eye and sleeping with him. Do you think they care about his music? Probably not. He's gorgeous, and a celebrity, and they wanna sleep with him.

bigray wrote:Do magazines still sell anymore? Yes I agree that does help to a certain extent but how many females buy a source or any hip hop magazine, I dont think many do, they would rather they're gossip type magazines that you see all over the stand right in your face at every cash register.

You missed my point.

I'm not talking about the magazine. I'm talking about what's on the cover of the magazine. Marshall's adorable wittle face. That's what attracts people - ESPECIALLY women/teenage girls. They see a very attractive white man on the cover of a hip-hop magazine and they immediately check out his music. That's called being marketable. When your appearance alone can force people to listen to you.

bigray wrote:No that is absolutely retarded and no thug at all, look what he just did too his body, complete idiot.

You missed my point, again.

It doesn't appeal to you because you're a middle-aged man. You're not a teenage boy in hopes of impressing every teenage girl. And you're not a teenage girl in hopes of finding a man just like Wayne. Lil Wayne is a marketable artist because of those things; his appearance and personality make teenage boys want to be like him, so they listen to his music because they think that's what's going to make them "cool" and hopefully get laid. Girls, on the other hand, take a look at Wayne and notice his body, his figure, and immediately listen to his music because he's so fucking hawt.

And before you know it, Lil Wayne just sold 900,000 copies (approximately) because of his image.

bigray wrote:His voice is kind of unique I would say, but at times you cant even understand him, he is going to fast.I do think YelaWolf is marketable.

If he could just change his voice...he might have a chance.

Marketing isn't about "SEO optimization" or "PPC advertising". It's about image. People see a commercial for the iPhone 5 and they immediately think, "WOW! That's so cool, I need one!" They don't even bother to look at the specifications, they just buy it because of its appearance: it's white, small, and looks cool. What more could you ask for?

Eminem was marketable because he was a white rapper. Because he was a rebel. Because he was cute. these things arent necessarily correlated.

And thats my point exactly. Marketable means there is something about your looks/ personality that can appeal to the masses or at the very least your target audience. And the things i stated about yela fall into that image category not lyrics.

Look, ed sheran looks like a hobbit and one direction like high skul football captains but both have massive female audiences. There is no "one" set defined image of what works or not

Well, I think that marketing in music is not your ordinary marketing. People here compare Eminem to SH and Yela. If you took Em, SH and Yela under your label, and they are all still underground artists, and gave them all the same level of promotion, Em would do better. There is so much you can do with promotion, the rest is on the artist. And Em just has more charisma and his skill level is higher than Yela or SH guys.

Like CanadaPure said, Radioactive WT:OH were just not good enough.

But, marketing is very important, I agree on that with Kathy.

And, I bet she will get at least one restraining order from someone in her life, that girl is a stalker.

No homo, but he's a normal looking dude. People think he's ugly because of his image and his style, but he's not a bad looking guy. He looks normal.

Trimss wrote:Word, and even Throw It Up was good until Gangsta Boo and Eminem came in. I mean yeah people overreacted and hated on it way too much (even though it's not a good verse, it's still better than anything from the pill era), but Yela definitely killed the song and made that bitch and Em sound stupid.

Good Girl was.. Eh. The Hardest Love Song In the World was also meh, but better than Good Girl.

But I'm not mad at him, because minus those two, the album is really good. I'm really mad at Eminem for not getting him that RiRi feature on Made in Usa though, because that other cunt sounded exactly like her.. But with Rihanna's popularity, it could have been a huge patriotic hit.

Ah.. If I was Eminem.. Yelawolf would have been as big as Tyga or Asap.

The only songs I would ever replay are Everything I Love The Most, Hard White and Let's Roll. But I prefer nearly everything on Trunk Musik to it and it could have been so much better.

I do have higher standards for Yelawolf than Slaughterhouse though. Maybe Wt:OH pleasantly surprised me because there was a bit of good music on there rather than just rapping. The mixtape was nothing to me, really.

Yeah I coulda told you that and I didn't study your subject. But I did study English and I think that Eminem is one of if not the greatest writer of all time! OF ALL TIME! And that is what contributed to his selling records. Not just the marketing of white guy with blonde hair and blue eyes saying offensive shit in a predominantly black art.
August 22 2013 - from Berlin to Paris, 400€ spent just for Eminem. IT WAS WORTH EVERY SINGLE CENT!

Yeah, it's clearly obvious in any business. Doing it is the trick. Of course it's not JUST marketing, but it's an important part.
