imo, they were amazing, but we can't really deny the fact that he was considered as a great mc back in the days and it had everything to do with his metaphors/punchlines
btw, in case some of you didn't get it, kendrick and jay's verses fit well together.
They were trying to diss each other but it was like a "friendly" competition
Kendrick's intention is to become the best in the game (1st verse) and Jay just said at the end of his verse that even if kendrick was great, even if he released a great album, he is still #1 ("Kill my vibe, that shit's a walkin' funeral")
Then kendrick started his second verse with "But you ain't you and me, turn eulogy to urinals" (this is exactly what Jay-z did at the end of his verse)
Actually, the "16 part" of kendrick is a reference to the "20 straight" part of Jay-Z.
Jay-z explained that he has been the best for 20 years and kendrick explained that he is becoming the best.
You have to keep in mind that kendrick got dropped from def jam because jayz left def jam back then and he was 16
"To put a ***** right on the big screen" > Jay-z is remixing the song of a young MC because he wants to stay relevant.
Some people also think that the lyrics "World in my palms" are a reference to the fact that Jay Z is such a bandwagon because he always work with the hottest MCs of the moment.
it's like he wanted to say " I can do what you do but I do it with a better flow".
that's why kendrick's second verse is very different from his 1st one
