Most rappers don't actually play any instruments, so they rely on the producer to be capable enough to do something interesting. Since most producers wouldn't make it by experimenting in a genre that thrives on recycling formulas, and most of the rappers themselves wouldn't even know how to do them justice, they just keep vomiting up the same old shit.

Fucking rap...

Well, the drum sounds aside, there's very little creativity in hip hop production.

It really doesn't matter how many different kick sounds there are, as you can alter them with effects. Unfortunately, it goes beyond that. They've all gotten lazy, because the bar is set so low in terms of talent for a producer now. Rap producers used to get by on their lack of traditional composition skills by sampling. Now, due to the legal limitations of that, it makes more sense to compose.

Unfortunately, most of them still don't have much in the way of compositional skill, and they don't make up for it by being interesting. They just re-use the same formula, cheap synths and simple drum patterns. It's pretty sad.

Fuck i would have absolutely agreed to you if you had given examples of Producers that are actually ASS. Alchemist and Seven are infact two of the producers who DO experiment AND the results are good. I mean, listen to that Rappers Best Friends 2 and tell me those beats are good.

yes, I agree, Alchemist beats will sound the same but that is because he gets into a "formula" on how to make music in every 2-3 year cycle. If you actually go through his discography you will notice how he switches up the formula from time to time. The new Russian Roulette album actually had some pretty interesting details on length. Plus, fuck all that... just his spoken word samples are fun as hell.

Seven is a GREAT producer. K.O.D is one of the best produced albums i have ever heard. And yes, sometimes the music doesnt sound as good as it should (a bit poppy, maybe like an Mp3) but as a general rule of thumb he murders his beats. He actually CREATES sounds (like the door knock, the coins in a cup etc) to counter the "same drum patterns" you talk about.

Now,hip-hop is a drum genre. You either like it or you dont. Same as Rock is a guitar one and jazz is saxophone driven. If you want to listen to other musical compositions its fine but to complain that all you get are the same drum sorta misses the point.

There is this one sound that is overused. the "eh" "ah" sound by Swizz Beats on "Throw some money on it" Producers should lay off that.

True.. some producers don't have the money though. But if we're talking Just Blaze-level producers who use those only and nothing else, yeah. I think it's probably all down to musical inspiration and how risky you're wanting to be with it. A lot of the beats in Hip Hop aren't really Music tbh, I've been thinking about that lately. A lot of it is just a drum loop, instruments and melodies locked into melodies that match, but you don't really hear a beat often that's composed.
