No it's not rare. There are tons of great artists/bands/musicians struggling everyday, those are the ones that deserve 'it'. Not Justin Timberlake backed by massive promotion, budget and exposure. Selling 950k then is hardly an accomplishment.
And how is JT different from all the other pop acts that make the charts nowadays? I'll never understand how everyone can be so hung up on Timberlake while at the same time mindlessly hate other pop acts. It's more or less same stuff, catered to pretty much the same audience. And I'm not even discussing talent here, JT is good at what he does but don't act like he's that different from the rest of them.
What really rustles my jimmies is the fact that you dismiss all contemporary music based on silly charts. You probably shouldn't even critique music if you base "music that we have today" on the top charts, since that is the furthest possible thing from an actual representation of the current scene.
