Just watch the Sam Harris youtube clip in the other thread. I pretty much share his position and disagree with Dan Dennett.

Dennett argues we have free will because we can choose different shit and then change our minds.

Although it fucking feels like we do, we don't have any influence or control over our conscious decisions.
It's such a strong illusion though.

And with that logic, it can be argued that everyone has a predetermined destiny. Nobody has control over their actions which means that something else has determined what they do and how they will respond to every situation... Giving a strong standpoint for a controlling deity.

A common misconception is Determinism = Fatalism. Which is not the case.

You achieving your University degree was a result of prior causes. Going to lectures, lecturing providing good notes, the uni being in your country, time spent studying etc. etc.

It was not your destiny to receive your degree regardless of your thoughts and actions.

And with your court comment, I agree with Willy's point in the other thread - That it is more practical for society to act like we have moral responsibility / free will even though, when being intellectually honest with ourselves, we know we don't.

I see where you're coming from with the prior actions argument. As humans, we are the sum of our experiences. That doesn't mean they define our actions--only influence them.

To answer OP, You die, maybe there is some sort of dream state for a few seconds and because of the way the mind works it seems like longer... in the end of the day though youre dead, you have no knowledge/feeling of what happens in the real world from that point on.

Thats why i dont think dead people aren't easy to disrespect, personally idgaf what happens to me when im dead. Im past caring at the point.

i think it'd be stupid to assume that everything just ends. I believe that after death "you" will just be someone else. Like right now i am everyone and everyone is me because our brain is what makes our consciousness so it could easily be made in someone elses' brain as well.
