Eminem Protege Skylar Grey to Release Debut Album in July

Postby JAGODA » Apr 10th, '13, 11:43

More than two years after Skylar Grey turned heads with her Grammy performance alongside Eminem and Dr. Dre on "I Need a Doctor," the singer will finally release her debut album, Don't Look Down, on July 9th.

Grey has been anxious to share the album, executive produced by Eminem, since she unveiled the lead single, "C'mon, Let Me Ride," earlier this year. "I just wanted to get music out so that I could start playing shows and promoting the album," Grey tells Rolling Stone.

Though the album won't be out for a few months, she will get to share more music leading up to the release. "I believe in hearing more than one song, because there are so many different sides to the album," she says. "So we came up with a plan, which is putting the album out July 9th, but before that putting out four singles where I do a little video for each one, just to get a lot of music out there."

The first track, "Final Warning," will be available April 16th. It's her favorite song on the album.

"This is the first time in my entire life of making music, when I made this song, where I feel like I finally figured out the way that I wanted to sound and the combination of things," she says. "I wrote the song three years ago, and it's still my favorite. I've written so many songs since then, yet I always go back to this one. It got me going on the whole Skylar Grey project."

Among the other upcoming tracks is "White Suburban," a piano and vocal track. While that might surprise some who only know her work in the hip-hop world, Grey has eclectic roots. She says her first concert was Alison Krauss and cites Bon Iver as the most recent show that blew her away.

"I come from a singer-songwriter world," she says. "I grew up making folk music, then slowly worked into pop, and then I've done the hip-hop stuff. So now what I'm doing is a combination of all that," she says. "It's singer-songwriter mixed with the hip-hop influences."

Though she expects additional features besides Eminem, who appears on "C'mon, Let Me Ride," the album won't be a star-studded collection. "I don't like to clutter my solo album with other people," she says. "I collaborate a lot outside of my album."

For instance, she appears on the song "Love Bullets" on the forthcoming will.i.am solo set, #willpower. While the two first met at a Grammy party celebrating Jimmy Iovine in February of last year, Grey only recently found out the song made the final cut.

"I went to the studio, and he just put up a track and I wrote something to it. It was the day that Whitney Houston died, and we got the news while we were in the studio together. So that was weird, and then basically I never heard anything after that about our song," she says. "A year later someone at the international department of Universal was like, 'Oh, I heard the song you did with Will for his album – it's awesome.' I didn't even hear it until two weeks ago when they sent it to me. Basically he took the vocal I did that day and he made a whole different track around it. It's really cool – it's more mid-tempo, not what I was expecting."

Grey will be hitting a record store on April 23rd to buy #willpower as part of a long-standing tradition she has to buy any albums featuring her work the day the record is released. And while she definitely plans to buy Don't Look Down July 9th, she has other plans in mind as well.

"It's my best friend's birthday, so ideally I'd be with her, and we'd be getting wasted and maybe we'd be setting off fireworks on the beach in Hawaii," she says. "I don't even want to be playing the music. I just want to be celebrating the fact that I pushed this baby out. "

Unless we get some news this or next week, we may have to wait until August.

Very long shot Trimssie... If that happened EM album would be still burning hot on the charts when Skylar's suppose to come... that kind of scheduling is generally kind of a bad business.

Anyway... whatever date before late second quarter at the earliest is highly unlikely.

I don't think it makes a difference when she releases her album. I don't think Interscope has faith that it will sell after Bicycle flopped. She's changed her image, made a pop song with the biggest selling rapper etc and that still didn't work. At this point releasing it the same time as Eminem or months apart isn't going to make a difference.

Gray's audience is probably completely different than Em's, so it doesn't really affect when the album will come out. It actually might benefit to have those albums out almost at the same time.

Not really... even artists from different labels who expect some sales plan their albums for at least 5 weeks after Eminem's.
Interscope is always about selling so if they don't expect her to sell whatever...they'll just get rid of her. There is no way those two albums will come within of like 5-6 weeks.
Her album would suffer for sure... let alone more or less it might distract the craziness surrounding Em's album as well 'cuz he'd be actually an exec. & a featured artist on her album. Like I said that's generally considered a bad business.
Let alone the fact Intescope statistically never releases albums that close to one another time wise.

Em has to be coming in June.

Ain't gonna come in July as it'll clash too much with Skylar...

And ain't gonna come in August as that's when his performances are booked.

And he ain't gonna go performing live with 'Recovery' tracks with everyone waiting on a new album, and Paul has basically confirmed his performances will be of new music.

So when do you propose he's coming?

Has to be before August, and will almost certainly now be before July. That only leaves June.

The other option actually is that he comes after her... which could happen. As in, late July.

Albums don't stay hot for long like they used to, so I doubt they seriously expect her to be blazing off the album for months. They're releasing four songs before the album, and then the album will do what it does in that week, her fans will listen, everyone else will move on, instantly.

It's not rare for record companies to have multiple releases in one month. It depends more on the competition of similar artists. Pink doesn't want to release the week as Rihanna, they have similiar audiences. Several times last year Interscope released their artist album a week apart. For all we know Interscope might release Eminem's album the week before or after Skylar's. For all we know one has nothing to do with the other because clearly Em's Exec Prod isn't going to guarantee many sales. Interscope has more a responsiblity to get the album out before or during Em's festival dates because that would be perfect promo opportunities.

January 29 Lana Del Rey
February 7 Van Halen
March 23 Madonna
March 27 All American Rejects

May 22 Haley Reinhart
July 6 50 Cent Mixtape
August 27 Slaughterhouse
September 4 Imagine Dragons
September 16 Carly Rae Jepsen
September 18 Nelly Furtado
September 21 No Doubt

October 22 Kendrick Lamar
November 12 Lana Del Rel Paradise Edition
November 19 Phillip Phillips

I meant affiliated back to back albums... considering as I said Eminem is the exec. & a featured artists on her album as well.
I mean you could still expect Em's album to drop like one or two weeks before hers, I don't have a problem with that... just that I don't think it's gonna happen.
The festivals few dates aren't all round domestic tour so naturally that's better for pre promotion rather than one for longevity.... esp. considering the whole situation which kind of means Em's next album is not gonna be out by then... we'll have to wait a little bit more to really know about it anyway.
If he did those shows on the wave of some great new single it would actually be great to promote the album just before it came.

My strong guess is late July, early August at the earliest... I said that like a month ago actually.
I've annoyed people too much with it so I won't bother now but I will probably do a really detailed thread about my theory based on all facts & info next month when it'd look way better considering most peeps expectations.

That's not rare either that an artist that's affiliated with another artist album is released close together. In some cases it helps and that may be Interscope's exact approach at this point. Remember Skylar's album has been pushed back from her original Spring release. She's said several times her album is done so what other reason would there be for a pushed back? It's starting to sound like deja vu with her tho, I wouldn't be surprised if it's pushed back again.

Either way unless Em isn't releasing until the end of the year, there's going to be at least a single around her so-called album release date.

I only take Skylar's album released date which like you said isn't even solid yet & Kendrick & 50's promotional strategies & events right now as piling up INFORMATION, not really as facts of why Em's album is gonna come when I think it's gonna come. I overall consider many more facts & what not but like I said I'll wait until next month & will then go very detailed on the matter.
