I know a lot of people are going to say SNES and N64 (and those are in my top 3 as well).
But I think the most beneficial console to gaming was the PS2, simply because every almost ever single genre was better off at the end of its life span.

N64 but I agree whole-heartedly about the PS2. The PS2 set the standard for gaming today.

snes, back when gaming was about creativity and innovation, not voice acting, cut scenes and graphics
