Relate to music

Postby Tomer666 » Apr 22nd, '13, 16:03

Perhaps I don't understand the real definition of relating to music, but I hear people say all the time how they relate to Emine, Tupac etc.., most of these people grew up in a fine white neighborhood with good financial state.
But I frankly can't figure how they can relate to rappers such as Tupac or Eminem whose rap is a lot about their rough childhood.
I'm not saying that only ghetto thugs should be allowed to listen to them, I am white myself and I grew up in a very good financial state, and I openly admit that Eminem and Pac are prolly my favorite rappers, but I never claim to relate to them, I like their raps because of other reasons.
I hear this especially about Tupac, people ALWAYS say that he's as good and successful as he is because people could relate to him, however the majority of his fans aren't ghetto thugs who still claims to relate to him.

So, maybe I don't understand the real definition of "relating to music", can someone explain it to me?

Well I don't know what to say but everybody can't relate to the same artist tbh.

Some artists can connect emotionally to the public, they can move people and in my opinion, this is the most important thing in hip hop because music is about connecting with the listener. Yeah it's great to have deep complex lyrics but if you're saying nothing how are you connecting to them? It's music as a whole.

You don`t need to be in the same situation as the artist to relate to his/hers music. If that was the case than only white kids with no father and with a crazy mother and wife and a daughter could relate to Eminem.

Music brings emotions that you recognise and relate to. Sometimes a song can describe your life perfectly, but most of the time it just brings a certain emotion that you feel at the time.

For example, The Way I Am is the song that I really love to listen when I`m sick and tired of everything or when I`m mad and pissed. I don`t have the problems Em is rapping about in that song, but the vibe of the song and the strong emotions you feel in that song just fit my mood perfectly.

I think this is how it is for me.

I don't necessarily have to relate to my artists. In fact I love Em, Tyler, OF, Redman, rappers like them who concentrate on rhymes rather than subject BECAUSE I can't relate to them. Yeah, obviously these guys relate to me on some level with some of their music, certain Em songs can bring out emotions, but really I just listen to music because I'm an audiophile. I love music, love all the sounds and everything. Love composition of a track almost as much as the actual rapping. I've never raped or hit a woman but I like to listen to music with those subjects because it reflects my frustration with relationships.
