idk if the movie was realistic because its been a while since i saw it. But youre right when u say a small army can win from a big one. Strategy and situation is way more important than quantity. The Romans used to beat bigger armies
I think it actually happened. It's in history books. They chose a smart strategy. For example you're in a room with your friend. You could hold up much more people if you were standing and fighting by the door so they can't attack you all at once.
It is based on a true story & that has definitely happened but it goes over the top here & there even apart the mutants part 'cuz at the end of the day it's just a movie. Look for & check out Battle of Thermopylae & you'll learn more about it.

Yeah, it wasn't meant to be lol. The movie does what it set out to do, tell a Hollywood-ized version of the story and make it seem cool.
But in regards to the OP it is fully possible. It takes strategy like others have said as well as knowledge of the area around you. A big part of why they withstood so long was simply knowing the area and using it to their advantage.
