Ronaldo To Leave Man Utd and England

From BBC Sport

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo says he will join Real Madrid or Barcelona after making it clear he wants to leave Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old has been criticised in England for his role in the sending off of club team-mate Wayne Rooney when Portugal beat England in the World Cup.

"I should get out of Manchester as the circumstances are not right," he said.

"Nobody stood up for me and my desire is to play in Spain. Will it be Real or Barcelona? It will be one of them."

Ronaldo added: "For some time I haven't had any support from my chief executive (David Gill) or my coach (Sir Alex Ferguson). They should have come out in my defence but no-one did.

"I am calm, I know I have done a good job and I've grown a lot in this World Cup, from a physical point of view and a mental one. In the next few seasons I will be even better."

Ronaldo has fours years left on his United contract and boss Sir Alex Ferguson said last week he expected the player to report for pre-season training.

He said: "There isn't a problem with the boy and I don't expect any problems.

"When people have been involved in a bid to become president at Madrid they have used clubs like ours."

New Real manager Fabio Capello said it was good news that Ronaldo was considering a move to The Bernabeu.

"He is a Manchester United player but everyone wants to come to play here and I think he really wants to and this is good news for me," said Capello.

"We will have to wait and see but at the moment I cannot say anything."

Ronaldo not for sale say Man Utd

Manchester United have insisted there is no chance of them selling winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 21-year-old Portugal star's future has been in doubt since he made it clear he wanted a move to Spain.

But a Manchester United statement said: "The club can confirm there is no possibility of Cristiano being sold.

"Cristiano recently signed a contract until 2010 and the club expects him to honour that contract. The club will not listen to any offers for Cristiano."

Highlights: England 0-0 Portugal (Port win 3-1 on pens)

Ronaldo has been criticised in England for his role in the sending off of United team-mate Wayne Rooney when Portugal beat England in the World Cup quarter-final.

In the aftermath of that outcry he said: "I should get out of Manchester as the circumstances are not right.

"Nobody stood up for me and my desire is to play in Spain. Will it be Real or Barcelona? It will be one of them."

Ronaldo also claimed: "For some time I haven't had any support from my chief executive (David Gill) or my coach (Sir Alex Ferguson). They should have come out in my defence but no-one did."

However, on Wednesday, the Manchester United winger appeared to have had a change of heart.

"I have no reasons to leave the club which has always supported me and has always helped me to evolve as a player," he said.

"There are no final decisions yet. Things will be worked out next week. I want to do this the right way. If I end up staying, that's fine. If I leave, that's fine too."

Ferguson said last week that he expected the player to report for pre-season training.

And it has been reported that he despatched his assistant Carlos Queiroz, who has always enjoyed a close personal relationship with Ronaldo, to smooth relations

Ferguson said: "There isn't a problem with the boy and I don't expect any problems."

The Manchester United statement concluded: "Cristiano is one of the brightest young stars in world football, as demonstrated by his performances at the World Cup.

"And Manchester United is not in the business of selling their best young players."

The statement will come as a warning to Real Madrid, whose new coach Fabio Capello is an admirer of the youngster who joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon for
