If the songs didn't leak, Em may well be dead.

Obviously this is a reach, but if the album was successful Em would have further degenerated into a false idea that he could do nothing wrong. Queue further drug use, a following album which would truly be worse than Encore, and a completely drugged up Eminem having to deal with one of the worst turnarounds in rap music history, and the loss of his best friend.

I think Encore was a blessing in disguise in the way it was released. It showed that Em was not untouchable.

I don't think Encore having a lukewarm reception really impacted him like it wasn't successful... I know he doesn't fully equate sales to success but he seems to use it as some kind of measure of whether he's working or not... and Encore was successful commercially...

Most critics at the time saw it as a 'good album' too...

Obviously he probably knew it wasn't up to scratch and that he was feeling bored and empty, and probably lived in bitter denial for a while "that shit'll be Illmatic"... because yeah, going from the absolute peak to your lowest, in one flash... that's got to sting quite a lot.

But I think that sunk in later maybe, whilst already in the swing of addiction anyway. Just added to it, but I think even if critics called it excellent... he still would have been an addict, as he was having writers' block and he knew it, he was still feeling bored and uninspired.

It was still a shock.

If the album had been received in a similar vein to TES he would have ridden a false wave of euphoria and further sunken into an arrogant idea that he could do no wrong. He may even have chosen to end his career there, although I think he would have made a further album which would really have been terrible.

It is good that he was jarred by the negative reception, as it has allowed him to reflect on his flaws.
It isn't as though we lost anything from the leaks.
We got a few more songs, which I appreciate for the beats, and if I choose to I can add the leaked songs to a custom Encore album.

Whatever the scenario, Encore would never have been a classic. His writing was just not up to scratch, and musically his deep, slurry voice would have droned into a largely boring album.

It would simply be known as the underwhelming following up to The Eminem Show.

Not the worthless piece of verbal diarrhea that it is currently referred to.

many people have referred Encore as a sort of "wake up call" for Em. So, you got something going on there. Nice theory.

"Five or six songs leaked from the original version of Encore. So I had to go in and make new songs to replace them. In my head I was pissed off: 'Oh well. Songs leaked. Fuck it. I'm just going to take a bunch of fucking pills and go in there and have a party with myself.' I'm sure the more pills I took, the goofier I got."

I think those 5-6 songs were the ones from the Straight From the Lab EP.

I honestly think LYM is the best song on Encore (Deluxe). 10/10 without a doubt.
