Who else misses the underground Em?

Postby Trilla » Oct 21st, '13, 06:48

"I'm the illest rapper to hold a cordless, patrolling corners
Looking for hookers to punch in the mouth with a roll of quarters
I'm meaner in action than Roscoe beating James Todd, Senior
And smackin' his back with vacuum cleaner attachments
I grew up in the wild hood as a hazardous youth
With a fucked up childhood that I used as an excuse"

"My attitude is worse than NWA's was
I'll battle you over stupid shit and diss people
Who ain't have shit to do with it like Cool J does (My tattoo!)
You see me standing outside of your building
Screaming: 'Puffy is good, but Slim Shady is for the children!'
I look at my life in a new light, fuck it
Give me two mics, I write songs for me
Fuck what you like, You probably hear me rap half-hearted
Cause I don't like rap anyway
I'm just trying to get my porno career started"

"Want a deal? Study these five chapters
Lesson One: throw demos as hard as you can at signed rappers
Lesson Two: face em and diss 'em
Don't give em a demo; kidnap 'em
And make em come to your basement and listen
Lesson Three: get a job at a label
Switch demos with Canibus and put yours on the owner's table
Lesson Four: know you heard this before
Hey let me get your number I'll call you tomorrow, for sure
Don't act like a fan, you wanna get signed
Get the whitest A&R you can find
Pull him aside and rap as whack as you can
Lesson Five: get a hook-up at Jive
Dress up like I.C.P. and have them come see you perform live"

Not really.

Having access to the necessary tools made him expand as an artist.

You gotta admit, though, some of the shit he wrote in the 90s is insane.

I just miss him being consistently good. I don't care what style or time period. He's lacked consistency since Relapse. And even that was less consistent than Pre 2003 Eminem. But still really consistent. These days, you just cross your fingers and hope. Back in the day, you didn't even think about it, you just knew.

Just think how cool it'd be if Em dropped a freestyle like any in the OP today.

Shit would be crazy.

I feel like if Em released an album where he was spitting like he did on Underground, Ridaz, On Fire, Untitled, 2011 Westwood freestyle, 2011 BET Cypher.......NO ONE would complain about shit.

I do. Not that I don't like current Eminem, but his rhymes and verses were razor sharp, like the 3rd verse of Bad Influence.
If you had one shot, or one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted, would you capture it? Or just let it slip?

Depends on your definition of freestyle. I used to think a freestyle was spit on the spot, but it seems like people are always coming out with "freestyle" songs that are obviously prewritten.

Big Daddy Kane Explains That A Freestyle Is Really A Written Rhyme
I can't post youtube vids/links but he says
"In the 80's when made a freestyle you mean it was "free of style" meaning it's not a subject matter. Off the top of the head we just called that off the dome where you don't write it and just say whatever comes to mind."

Do you believe he's better now than he was in 98-2000?

97-2000 was definitely underground Em. He was at his rawest and wasn't rhyming like a total idiot.

He was in the mainstream, but his rhymes still had an underground influence. Unlike today.

When do you think the freestyles I quoted in the OP were made? Around 99-2000.

97 I count as underground. Underground and mainstream are mutually exclusive terms. You can't be both at the same time.
