MMLP2: Does the name fit the album?

Postby ladelsofgravy » Oct 30th, '13, 22:29

As I said, I'm not going to review the album or it's songs until next week, but I do want to talk about Em's gutsy decision to name his album as a sequel to his most successful album, MMLP1.

I do think, conceptually, this album is a perfect balance between new and old. And it's well worthy of it's name.

I think we all had two fears:
1. This album would just be a lame attempt to re-capture the success of MMLP1
2. This album would be thematically nothing like MMLP1 and it would be a marketing gimmick

But neither of these are the case. In my view, Em doesn't rest on his previous success but rather expands on it. He appends the concepts he spoke of years back and nostalgically touches on them again, but still pushes forward as well and never goes too far when talking about the past. It also provides a modern take on many of the same issues he tackled on years ago.

Rather than being derivative or a weak clone, it moreso seems like MMLP1 was a letter and MMLP2 is a "PS" (but with a lot of other new things on it as well). It's a tough balance to strike for a sequel, but by choosing to give it it's own identity that ADDS TO (instead of taking away from) it's predecessor, the album is a true sequel that has merit in it's own right.

And is aptly named.

It does. PERFECTLY. Quote me on it. This is The Marshall Mathers of 2013, the 41 year old version, completely to a tee. This is the point of the album, believe it. And it that aspect, it's perfect.

Hmm... In my opinion, not completely, but at the moment I can't think of another name that would fit it better.

The name fits the album perfectly, this is a true sequel. But there's no chance this will be be his last album. When he decides to stop rapping, he'll let people know. It won't be mentioned just in one song, that's for sure.

I'll be living this hip hop till hell freezes over...

Yup, If I heard this album without knowing the name, and someone asked me for an appropriate name, I'd probably think of the name MMLP2 tbh. It really does fit. I reaaally doubt this is the end though. His last album will be completely themed around it being the end, and the name will reflect that. He can't just leave us hanging with the end of "Evil Twin" (good song btw). He'll end his career on an "It's been real" type of note, and make sure we all know.

Infinite 2 or Slim Shady LP 2.
Ending on a name where it began.
