MMLP2: Rank the hooks (best to worst)

Postby ladelsofgravy » Nov 1st, '13, 13:12

In this album, mostly, hooks were made to be short, simple, catchy and as an accessory to the song rather than the appeal to the song itself. And I'll judge them in that context.

Berzerk - Easily the best chorus in the album, so much that it can support the relatively weak verses.

Evil Twin - I love this one a lot. It's a throwback to a lot of his old hooks for sure.

Headlights - Dedicating nearly half the song to Nate Reuss is surely a risky decision, but one that paid off.

Bad Guy - Fits very well with the song.

Legacy - Catchy and captures a feeling that the rest of the (awesome) song couldn't.

The Monster - Rihanna does it again. What more can I say?

So Much Better - Great hook. I have some reservations on the rest of the song, but the chorus certainly buoys it.

Asshole - Yes, it's short and simple, but that's a good thing. It's no longer than it needs to be and it accomplishes what it sets out to do.

Brainless - In and of itself, it's not spectacular, but in context with the song, it's great.

Stronger Than I Was - Good chorus, but I take the song as a whole rather than in parts.

Rhyme or Reason - It's unique for sure. Just doesn't meet my personal tastes.

Survival - A functional well-done chorus. Nothing more or less you could say about it. Doesn't stand out in any way.

So Far - Not bad but could've been better for sure.

Love Game - The chorus in particular, whether by the sample or Kendrick, isn't appealing. But this is one of those songs you have to take in as a whole rather than the sum of it's parts.

Rap God - Somebody had to get the bottom. This song is 99% about the verses and the chorus only needed to be perfunctory at best anyway.

I don't agree with most of this list. I'll post mine later.

A lot of the best hooks are the ones he sings himself. Berzerk still has an awesome hook, even though I've heard it a thousand times already. Right now I'm really digging Brainless and So Much Better's hook. Bad Guy has a pretty good hook as well.

This darkness comes in me (Evil twin)
And comes again
That ain't me
He's just a friend who pops up now and again
So don't blame me, blame him
