So anyone that has noticed me and/or my gigantic "Stephen King suffering from amphetamine psychosis" style posts that I've been making here and there since just after MMLP2 dropped is just probably aware of the fact that I really, REALLY like MMLP2.
A funny fact is, considering the amount of thoughts I have about the album... I've only listened to it once through. I was planning on listening to it so there wouldn't be a bunch of assholes on the internet having the luxury of hearing it way before I did and feeling behind the times in the Eminem section of pop culture... but only listening to it once before buying it on the 5th.
Didn't happen. I uploaded it to my mp3 player and played it in my van on the way into the neighboring town to buy scissors so me and my cousin could have our weekly "cut out silhouettes of ourselves and tack them to the wall beside all of the advertisements at the post office while trying out "Frank's Red Hot Sauce" on random foods" night... and it randomizes the tracks. I skipped the songs until "Bad Guy" came up. I specifically wanted to hear that one again... it was even better than the first time which I'm sure you guys can understand and relate with. Now, the point of this thread aside from making you all aware that I'm half-retarded so everyone feels sympathy and therefore is nice to me when they don't agree with my ludicrous opinions in the future, is to discuss the SECOND song that came up randomly (after I got to bad guy.)
It was "Asshole."
I remembered noticing and even commenting on the fact that everyone, or, a lot of people here that DO love the album seem to dislike this song specifically... at least in comparison to the rest of the package. I recall loving this song on the first listen but on that first listen... you're not really analyzing it... it's too much. You're experiencing it for the first time. I mean... you take enough from it to know whether or not it's amazing or whether or not you like it. I remembered the song "Asshole" standing out on my first listen through the album... as something positive.
When this came on in my van (I have a van... and yes it's white... but it has windows so that means I'm not a pedophile and no one is allowed to suggest otherwise or I'll find you and you'll get LEGO thrown at your lawn.), I instantly recalled my post on the forums about "Asshole" alongside all of the hate... no... not hate... slight disliking in comparison to the rest of the album that I've seen a lot of people portraying here on the forums as well as my own post claiming that I liked the song.
When I heard it today for the second time while driving, it was goosebumps the whole time. That fucking Asher Roth line?! That's some of the rawest shit I've heard from him since his comeback in 2009. I just listened to it AGAIN for a third time to confirm or re-consider my opinion...
I honestly have no idea what it is that anyone could see in this song in a negative light that makes it stand out as one of the worse songs to you... The power of suggestion after seeing the first person that commented on it speak of it negatively and then the ripple effect, possibly? Probably not. I'm thinking on my stereo the beat must be complimented and the beat must be too much and sound distorted on most stereos or something.
To me, on a good system, this is one of the most raw, hardcore, witty, MMLP Em songs I have ever heard. It's definitely one of my favorites on the album. It makes "Almost Famous" look... like shit when judging it for the reasons that we originally loved its presence on recovery. I remember the first time listening to "Asshole" thinking "Holy shit, listen to how hard he's going, this reminds me of the flow from the first verse of "The Way I Am"!"
I don't think this song is as good as "The way I am" but I think it would fit on the ORIGINAL MMLP and be on par with shit like Kill you, Who Knew, I'm Back, Bitch Please II... and under The way I am, Stan, Kim and Criminal.
Too much hot sauce in my system or what?
