MMLP2 for Completely New Listeners = Just As Good?

Postby TotalEminemFanboy » Nov 3rd, '13, 23:27

After listening to MMLP2 about 10 times fully through, I must say that I really do love this album. There are so many things to love about it, so many incredible songs, and so many references to his past works that just make you smile (or in the case of Bad Guy and Headlights, make your jaw drop).

Now my question for you all, is do you think that someone who listens to this album without ever hearing Eminem before would feel the same way that we feel about this? I feel as though songs like Headlights and Bad Guy, while they're still excellent, just wouldn't be anywhere close to as powerful if a listener had never heard MMLP1 or his other works, so do you think that may explain why certain people aren't feeling this album as much as we are?

this was definitely made for the long term fans, crammed full of nostalgia, it may attract new people, because his skills are off the charts, but it will definitely not have same impact

I think tracks like the monster will attract a certain demographic.
Survival MAY attract gamers
Berzerk will attract the general crowd.
The album was MADE for us but I'm sure everyone can enjoy it

Depends what your preferred type of genre is in my opinion, if you listen to hip-hop then hear the album then there's a chance they'd get the same feelings as people who are already eminem fans. Whereas if you listen to a more poppy genre then no they wouldn't appreciate it, as eminem/hip-hop fans tend to care more about ryhmes/flow/beat etc whereas the vast majority of people only care about a catchy hook

edit - plus havent not heard MMLP1 then they wouldnt appreciate Bad guy, parking lot, So far etc

Generally, I would say a new listener will like the album. They won't have the nostalgic aspect, which is what will make the more long-time fans like it more then a new or casual fan, but I think it will still be well-liked.

I haven't heard the album yet, but I would imagine what's lacking for new listeners is time. If you bought MMLP1 & 2 and listened back to back for the first time then I'm not sure it would impact as much because most of us have been listening 5-10 years or even 15. Music takes a lot of time and listens to sink in fully, you can't grasp something after binge listening to a new album 30 times in 3 days. So I believe if you listen to mmlp2 as your first Em album, it seems you would lose a ton of context

Even MMLP1 needs you to listen to SSLP to truly appreciate the atmosphere it was released in. It was the perfect response to the critics who were going off on how bad SSLP was for the kids blah blah. These days I feel obligated to explain all this history when I introduce someone to Eminem for the first time.

Anyway, to answer the OP. If "The Monster" is the song that made someone buy MMLP2 then I feel sorry for him/her; it's a curve ball haha.

Well yes of course, but a new listener would probably say "I love this album, maybe I should listen to the first." The only album I think needs to introduction is Recovery. You can pretty much piece that together as you listen

I think MMLP2 has enough general appeal to interest a new listener. They would enjoy songs like Berzerk and Survival, and then would wonder what that Parking Lot skit is about, or the whole story behind Headlights. It wouldn't surprise me to see MMLP hitting 11 Million come 2014.
