Stan is a classic, Lose yourself is a classic.

You're confusing popularity/popular opinion with reality.

In that case.. the mainstream doesn't really know Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, and many other classics dropped by even popular artists. So, by your standard everything J-Biebz drops is classic.

But, I am strongly against calling MMLP2 a "classic" with a song like STIW, Asshole, The Monster, Survival.. only Stans will call this album a "classic" even probably only for a year. It's a very above average (for Em) album.

And, Bad Guy is a GREAT song for FANS of Eminem.. but it isn't as great as you guys make it out to be.. You're just being affected by your nostalgia.

Well, there's different kind of classics I guess. Those of mainstream, subculture, personal etc.

I can tell you Justin Bieber hasn't made any classics considered by mainstream even with his popularity. This is also the reason he doesn't have longevity like Eminem. Stan and Lose Yourself were HUGE hits but they're still great songs to listen to even to this day.

I don't see many people listening to Baby over 10 years and saying "Wow, what a classic. This is pure genius."

I don't think the album is a classic though. Just a decent album. It doesn't have enough of a musical identity to be a classic. It's a collection of Eminem songs... some this, some that, There is no 'sound' which comes to mind when you think of MMLP2... it pretty much sounds cohesive due to track placement and the great production... but no, I don't think it's a classic.

After 100+ listens to the album (really), I'm inclined to agree with you. There're classic songs on here for sure like Bad Guy, Evil Twin, Brainless, Headlights, and Rhyme or Reason, but there isn't a cohesive theme like with his first three. Although I still think that at least 2 or 3 of mmlp2 songs can make top 10

MM2 has as much of a theme as MM1, it has classic songs and the supposed "weak" songs aren't universally regarded as such i.e are highly subjective.
Therefore, I repeat MM2 is classic, I haven't really read any reasons so far to convince me otherwise.

The 'cohesive' nature of the big 3 was mostly due to the fact that they represented certain attitudes...
SSLP goofy/jokey/pushing buttons
MM1 angry/lashing out at society
TES maturity/outward looking
Of course, ^ isn't a perfect representation of what those albums are about but y'all should get my point.
MM2 is cohesive, even without the "track placement and production" because it's Em looking at old theme's with new eyes and REACTING to things all over again, seriously, the cohesion of an Em album has never been due to the songs( Em touches on an incredibly diverse range of subjects in his albums) it's due to the frame of mind in which he makes those songs and MM2 has that just as much as any of the big 3.

^ MM2 progresses, it's like a 70-something minute story.
Compare "Bad Guy"/ "Parking Lot" and "Headlights", Bad Guy represents the starting point/ the brief summary/ the prologue of the album, Parking Lot is a literal continuation of Criminal and So Much Better is reminiscent of vintage slim, then the album progresses, it's more noticeable during the So Far/ STIW/ The Monster triad of songs, those 3 are a representation of where he's at right now and the preceding songs are a tale of his journey So Far...see
Love Game is playful, kinda but not really passing the torch and Headlights is the cherry on the cake, probably the most credible sign of maturity on the album.
Evil Twin is both "syke, y'all thought I was going out all mature and resopnsible huh? bwa ha ha, I coulda changed the world, if it wasn't for this verse" and a statement of intent "I just wanna rap/ fuck top 5" etcetera...
TL; DR, the criteria you're using to guage the cohesion of TES, MM1 and SSLP won't precisely work on MM2 because the sequel NEEDS different rap styles, every story needs a starting point to show change after all, MM2 is the (rather brilliant) showing instead of telling of the story of Marshall's maturity, a closing of chapters, if you will and a statement of intent of what he wants to do next.

IMO, it can't be a hip hop classic if it doesn't create any impact in the culture. But I agree with your points and thats why I think the track is an Eminem classic.

Also, the writing on this is really well done.
