What Song Sums Up MMLP2?

Postby yung rom » Nov 30th, '13, 20:47

Eminem said he created The Marshall Mathers LP 2 not to just replicate his album from 2000, but to revisit that time. So considering this album underlines quite a few ideas, what song do you think sums up the entire the album the best? I'm sort of stuck between Evil Twin (admitting that he and Slim Shady "are the same") and Bad Guy (the last verse, of course).

What do you guys think?

Evil Twin.
"There's darkness closing in, here it comes again
It controls my pen, that ain't me, it's my evil twin
(I step out and see my evil twin, he gives me an evil grin)
He's just a friend who pops up now and again
So don't blame me, blame him, my evil twin
(I step out and see my evil twin, he gives me an evil grin)"

Rap God. Because after all is said and done, MMLP2 will mostly be remembered for Eminem being "good at rapping" and very little else. All the homophobic slurs, apology to his mom, stan 2 etc are news because news outlets want something to print. In all honesty, most fans just enjoyed how he put words together. And most non-fans just remember that he was "rapping alot of words" encompassed by Rap God

Mind explaining?

Sidenote- Two years ago, i called You are Never over the "best song on the album.... By a mile" just because of the "emotions" it has. Now, it makes me cringe. I used to be such a sucker for "personal content" and would have probably loved Headlights had it been then. Now, i just like words man. Like eminem i just.... I could care less if he rapped about Soulja boy. As long as its well written.

Comparing you to Mononym was a grave insult, I apologise. Nobody deserves to be compared to Mononym.
Heh.
Anyway, Rap God was memorable, but Headlights, imo, captures what MM2 is about; a closing of chapters, adressing past wrongs and the birth of a more restrained Em.
I'm pretty sure it has occured to everyone, including Em himself, that the Rap God video could have had a lot more buzz if he had just flashed a picture of Boy George or Elton when he said "gay-looking boy".
Stans would eat it up, HuffPost would have a stroke and the media would wet itself with excitement.
It would be classic Shady humour.
It would be all over Twitter.
It would also be pointless and damaging to Em in the long run, trapping him in the niche of shock value artist, but he showed restraint and I'm (sort of) happy about that.
MM2 isn't just great rapping, it's wit and self awareness and being conscious of his place in Hip-Hop and music.
It's Eminem having fun and spitting better than 99% of rappers out there, seriously, the great rapping- like in any other great Eminem album- is almost incidental.

Well, he was mature on Going through changes. That was him attempting to reconcile with the woman he killed on KIM. He has had the "mature" label for a very long time now. My Darling was him having that "self awareness and self examination" so, that doesn't make it unique to MMLP2. The same way his "homophobic slurs, outdated cultural references, women hate" are running themes throughout ALL his albums, he has those "personal moments" on all of them. Hell, hell the Sequel had Take from me! Lol

so, that is why i feel headlights is not as monumental as people are trying to make it. Him reconciling with Kim on Going through changes just makes this so much less "big."

plus, Rap God has all the "self awareness" stuff too. Women hate address, how he raps address, his place in the game, his last album "trying to censor you...." etc
