Kanye West's albums keep getting worse, his critical receptions keep getting better. Illuminati brah.

Seriously though, does anyone else find it strange that this dude gets critical praise but is NEVER listed by hip hop heads as one of the greatest hip hop heads ever, or even considered one of the greatest musicians in music period?

Em, Nas, Jay, Pac, Biggie -- these are names you always see on peoples' lists. A list Kanye will never make, no matter how much left field hipster garbage he puts out. And you can say he's not aiming for that but rather aiming to be a great artist in general but I don't know any non hip hop head who listen to him. I don't even know who his audience is.

Not sure if srs. 2010 was Eminem's year going away with it. He was everywhere. Recovery earned more Grammy noms than any of his other albums and was a critical and commercial success. It was consistently listed as one of the best albums of the year.

I've only heard NWTS, Yeezus and MM2 off that list.
I can understand placing Yeezus over MM2 since it's more cutting edge and aggressive, maybe even "revolutionary" and MM2 is more... traditional, I guess. I don't agree, but I understand.
NWTS though, how the fuck is NWTS a better album than MM2?

anyway, "2013 one of the best years in music in a while" is just wrong on every level. 2013 was AWFUL in music.

Most releases from the mainstream failed to recapture the public'c imagination and only their fans really responded to it. Think NWTS, MCHG, Born Sinner, MMLP2, Hall of Fame, Ross, Wale. None of the big albums translated to feeling like a "cultural moment" type of situation. I consider Long Live Asap 2012. It leaked in December and all the big tracks were out long before that.

The lone exception to that is of course Yeezus, which is a downright shame because the music itself is barely above average. The fact that Bound 2 is getting all this universal acclaim when its so lazy is a joke.

Even on the underground, it seems that what used to be surefire excellent lost some of its luster. Hopsin, Tech N9ne, alchemist... I am a fan of all of them but their music stagnated in 2013 and was not giving you that "oh i gotta listen to that on repeat" feeling.

The sole album to generate some excitement and acclaim this year was Run the Jewels and i actually REALLY love that album. Its well made.

Tbh, a big reason for the dud of 2013 is the gentrification of Hip-hop into this "hottest rapper" phenomenon. Basically, having Future on all hooks, Mike Will Made it on all instrumentals and Juicy J as a guest on all tracks. Like, these corporations don't even try to be subtle about that anymore. Smfh

and the underground feels a need to compare artists so much they basically only want TDE everything. That would be fine by me if 2013 wasn't the year of Schoolboy Q who is downright boring. Devoid of any and all charisma. Fuck. Collard Greens was only saved by Kendrick rapping in Spanish! Smfh

that said, Jhene Aiko. Yes, that i can support.

What the FUCK? How can people complain about Kanye being highly ranked when Recovery made the top 10?

And for that matter, if Recovery made the top 10, how is MMLP2 not in the top 5?

Recovery is a better album than Yeezus. Fact.

Yeezus is #1 on Spin's list

As a white dude living in a hipsters' favorite city-- IT'S WHITE HIPSTER REVIEWERS. They wanna love a black rapper who is "socially conscious" and loves Obama while fitting their dumb-ass "experimental" needs so they "sound cool."

They are idiots. I hate hipsters so much. Especially when they couldn't even name 2 songs off of 'College Dropout'.

Recovery is a good solid album and overall very interesting, his fans nitpick the bad lines, and forget the whole image. it's way better than Yeazus, you can see how much Eminem worked on it.

I'm a huge Kanye and Eminem fan.

MMLP2 >> Yeezus. I didn't hate Yeezus, but I didn't love it like I did Late Registration and MBDTF. Some songs had really questionable beats that make you scratch your head. First off, it's really freakin' short. The lyrics seemed really weak and lazy for large portions of the album, such as "I wanna fuck you hard on the sink / After that get you something to drink". A sixth grader could have written that. It's shameful because Kanye still can have some really awesome lyrics such as the New Slaves second verse...he seems just to get lazy sometimes. I found he was average/below average on the Cruel Summer shit, and just average on WTT. He was absolutely incredible on MBDTF. Epic album.

Anyways, not sure how the hell Yeezus made it to #2. It's his worst album. I like New Slaves, Black Skinhead, and Blood on the Leaves. Those are great tracks. There's a couple decent tracks and a whole bunch of below average tracks. Send It Up and On Sight are trash, IMO.

This.
I'm not a Kanye hater. He made 2 of my favorite albums of all time. To put "Yeezus" #2 and "MMLP2" #25 for 2013 is disgraceful, and says a lot about the people who rate albums for major outlets.

I'm more offended that "Yeezus" is #2 as opposed to "MMLP2" being #25.

so if anyone could hit me up with a working link, that would be dope (cant do torrents coz my internet provider has blocked them all)

"College Dropout" is an absolute classic. Top 5 in my favorite albums of all time. The musicianship/production/lyrics are on a whole different level than "Yeezus".

Hope you get a link to work.
