I know this is probably just a reach, but in the monster video he is just searching through his mind and reflecting on his past until he finds where slim shady has been held.
This is all great but around the cage i noticed all the pill bottles as a nod to relapse, but i cant help but feel like that was a metaphor for when he was searching for slim shady during his relapse era. He kept trying to tap into where he was and he got close but wasnt quite there.
Idk im probably wrong and it's really late here, but what do you think?

something even darker in himself and had to lock it up.

I think the point of the video (reinforced by the final scene) is that Eminem is still trying to be as dope as he used to be (hence his old self handing him lyrics from his prime), but is trying to stay away from everything that ruined his old self and eventually drove him mad.

Basically, it's a visual affirmation of his latest mantra, "I just rap." He doesn't want any of the other bullshit that comes with it...just wants to rap.

If you want to look even further into it (probably further than Eminem looked into it), Eminem's saying he's not as cool as he used to be but he's happier and his life is more stable now.

Old Eminem is in the cage, yeah. But I think the "he wants to be as dope as he was..." is take it too far. I see it more like the one in the cage is his old druggadicted self, what the fame made to him....and he is trying to stay away from that (here I agree with you). I just disagree in "he is trying to be as dope as he was"....I don't think Eminem thinks he is less dope now.

All I know is that this is my Favourite of Em's music videos since When I'm Gone. So nostalgic watching him play his "old self" in it, this just proves to what a long way he's came from his early days a drug-riddled fame.
