How about this? Fuck you. I've been a staunch Eminem fan since 99, and to say that I don't deserve to be a fan because I like Encore more so than Recovery is fucking ludicrous.sbolli1 wrote:I don't care how "Eminem" Encore sounds and how "un-Eminem" Recovery sounds..
It's not really about that, though it does help. There are many factors that contribute to my Encore > Recovery opinion.sbolli1 wrote:Encore was a fucking rambling, drug-addicted rapper who had nothing left to say and realized it, while Recovery, although awkward at times, was a recovering drug addict with a new positive outlook on life..
I guess you are the type of fan that takes things at face value, I like to dig deeper than that. The fact that Encore is about a tired, frustrated, and depressed drug addict is what makes it so interesting imo.
Now, can we dead this whole "he had nothing to talk about on Encore" bullshit? He had plenty to discuss, and amidst of all the farting, burping, and dick jokes, he actually delivered songs with personal/meaningful/mature content with a normal stream of conscious.
Songs like Yellow Brick Road give us a detailed story from his past as a white kid from Detroit, while doing an excellent job at tying in and addressing "Foolish Pride" at the end of it. Like Toy Soldiers is still one of Eminem's most mature records to date and a very important one as it came at the tail end of all the beefs he was involved with at the time. Mosh was also a significant record at the time due to all the political turmoil surrounding the 2004 presidential elections in America, it was an anthem for those opposed to the controversial Bush administration. We've heard Eminem touch on politics in the past, but never had he delivered a song as powerful, direct, and aggressive as Mosh. Then you have songs like Mockingbird, which truly is a touching dedication to his daughters. Aside from those, you have various songs in which he addresses his love life (Puke, Spend Some Time, Crazy In Love).
Where Em fucked up on Encore was the middle portion, had he just replaced My 1st Single and Big Weenie (the worst of the bunch imo) with We As Americans and Love You More (2 songs better than any song on Encore, aside from maybe Yellow Brick Road) the album wouldn't have the reputation it has today.
So while the lyrics on Encore may not be as complex as it's predecessors, to say the album is void of any content is highly inaccurate. One other thing that helps it is the production. Luis Resto, Dre, and Eminem all did an excellent job on production, it's amongst his best produced albums (right after The Eminem Show and Relapse).
Now, you're also looking at Recovery at face value. Eminem has been a recovering drug addict since Relapse. Recovery isn't all about somebody having a positive outlook on life (he already had that the moment he decided to stay sober), all he did was address it on a much more personal level on a few songs (Talkin 2 Myself, Going Through Changes, Not Afraid, Cinderella Man).
Imo, Recovery sounds like a rapper trying too hard to show off and impress a demographic who were too stupid to understand or appreciate his previous effort. An artist compromising his artistry and adopting the musical elements of the typical pop-radio rapper in order to dominate the charts once again. At the very least, he succeeded, which at least gives Recovery reason to exist.
Don't get me wrong, at times Recovery makes for an entertaining listen (it can be fun to hear Eminem shitting on everybody) but it's dated, unoriginal, and cliché.
It sounds like Eminem (for the first and only time in his career) made an album to cater to a certain audience rather than making an album that was true to his artistic integrity, and that's only the base of it. Factor in the corny punchlines, the sub-par production, terrible features/un-credited singers and you have Eminem's worst album to date. It doesn't make it a terrible album, because it isn't, but I just feel that Encore is better, even if by a small margin.
Now please, I'm done with this Encore vs. Recovery bullshit. I will quote this anytime the subject is brought up.
