The fact that Rihanna understands what kind of artist Eminem is must make him comfortable. That's why he keeps collaborating with her. He's an antisocial introvert who is a self-proclaimed idiot savant while Rihanna is a party girl, an urban radio artist who sings songs written by other people just to make hits but she understands him, as evidenced by what she's said about him. This alone makes Rihanna special in Eminem's eyes.
About the music they make together, I like Love the Way You Lie and it obviously took a great role in his later career. It re-established his place in pop music. How we feel about Eminem right now would be drastically different if not for the song. And as we all know, Eminem likes to please every type of fan that he has. So, yeah I'm not surprised that he'd do something like this.
