Stray Cats question

Postby Atone » Mar 3rd, '14, 13:56

So, i've lived here since July 2010, and from day 1, there have been dozens of cats that hang out in my yard, my neighbore claims they are all hers, she even came over and flipped out on me cuz i threw a soda bottle at one of the cvats to get them out of my yard when i first moved here.

Problem is, all of these cats she claimes as hers look very, sick, i guess you can say, there's one with a missing eye, one was deaf, i havn't seen that one in months tho, there's one that comes around and sits with me when i sit outside, and he has blood on his mouth all the time, there's 3 black kittens that look like they never eat, and a grey baby kitten that now visits me all the time when i sit outside.

recently, i began feeding these cats to help them, some of them look alot better than they used to, the baby kitten, he sleeps in my lap outside all the time now, but there is something wrong with them because whenever he eats the food i put out, he struggles to breath, he does this even when i don't put food out, and he sneeses to, would anybody know what is wrong with this one? it sounds as if he has an asthma attack when he struggles to breath, now, i have a cat of my own so i know what it sounds like when a cat coughs up furballs, that is not the sound this kitten is making.

And before you all suggest me call the SPCA to have the cats picked up, i've tried that, they will not pick up cats, they say we have to trap the cats and take them in ourtself and they will actually charge us a fee per cat, .

Atone, I have a cat of my own as well, My girlfriend and I recently had taken a stay around September last year. He came up to me one day while I was grilling outside and was so tiny and sick I couldn't let him go the winter like that. So we let him in, took him to the vet and let him out when he wanted to go etc. He became part of our life for a couple of months, even getting along with my cat. Then one night last month I let him out like always (he would wait by the door until I did). The next night I looked on my back porch to find him there dead, I didn't know what to do. Brought him inside and everything, he was still warm and all that. The vet determined that he must have gotten some illness or disease outside or even earlier that wasn't noticed or fast acting. It was one of the saddest things I've ever seen.

Strays sadly carry a lot of problems, as well as attachment they can also get you or your real cat sick which isn't worth it. I know none of this really answers your question, but be careful with strays. Once you feed them they will remember and never leave you alone.

Build a cardboard fort outside your house then.
Like this, just bigger and with underground tunnels

Thats deep man, few years ago one of the strays was found dead in the back yard, the guy who lives behind us came to tell us there was a strange smell back there, thankfully i was not home for this, my dad ended up burying the cat, it sucks these strays have to live with the issues they have, expessially cuz this one is a baby, maybe 3 months old, it's funny cuz anytime i go outside to shoot targets (Pellet Rifle) this kitten is usually next door, or somewhere down the street and within minutes runs up to sit with me, there's an orange one that will lay by my feet and watch me shoot as well,

idk what it is that made me become this person who suddenly loves these cats, but i really wish i could help them all

Yeah It's just sad as hell. And the stray cats are so loyal and like appreciate the littlest things, the problem with the one I took in was that he was about 2 years old from what the vet said. And after the first trip to the vet everytime we tried to take him he would shit or pee in the car. So we just stopped trying and let him do his thing. If this little one seems young you should take it in for a check up or something, they aren't bad cats especially if their young they won't have as many "stray" tendencies.

That's sad :(

I still say call the SPCA, tell them that shes hoarding them. That might get their attention. If not, ask them who you can contact that willing to do THEIR job for them.

There's a guy that lives down the street that works for animal control and he never does shit, he sees the cats, i've spoke to him before, he's a prick to,

That black and white cat that i mentioned that always has blood on his mouth, he's been around awhile, i remember when he was a baby kitten i would always feed him, he was skin and bone at that time cuz these cats never eat unless of course i sit out side and feed em,

There was one morning i set 2 handfuls of cat food out on the sidewalk and suddenly, there was a swarm of seagulls, i was out there shootin targets and decided to try to scare the seagulls away and accidently hit one of the seagulls, it was obviously dying, but still trying to get up to fly but was just, scooting down the street with 5 or 6 cats standing around it, i felt like shit for shootin a bird, but i figure, maybe the cats got some dinner out of it.

But yeah, i've called SPCA at least 4 or 5 times, at one point i even showed up at the SCPA to speak to them and they told me there is nothing they can do, i would have to set up traps to bring the cats in, but, they would charge me a fee per cat,

Now, trapping these cats, for a few of them, there would be no need, i've gained their trust enough that now they come right up to me and i could easily put them in the car and take them, BUT, i don't have the money to pay these fees, it pisses me off to, cuz there's some shitty little kids that live around here and i've seen these kids throw shit at the cats, one of the kids even tried to run one of the cats over with their scooter,

The cats will most likely be put down in the hands of animal control.
