Someone tell me if this is good.
The Real Slim Shady
Throughout the years, there have been many controversial artists in the music industry. However, few have been more controversial than Marshall Mathers. His fierce rhymes and tell-it-like-it-is style caught many people off guard. At times, it seems that Eminem has no limit to what he rapped about and that fact tends to offend many people. Most people can agree that his music can be quite unsavory at times. However, some people don't like to think about why his music is that way. Eminem's music is violent, sexist and homophobic because of the things he has gone through in his life.
The violence in Marshall Mathers' lyrics is a product of bullying and the hip hop culture in general. As a child Eminem was small and scrawny, which made him an easy target for bullying. The fact that he moved around a lot and was always the new kid at school did not help either. One winter day while Marshall was outside playing at recess, an older student picked him up and threw him into a frozen snow bank. He sustained a serious head injury and was in a coma for ten days as a result. Any type of brain injury could affect a person's personality. It can turn a nice person into a grumpy and mean person. This could have caused Eminem to become the person he is today. A year or so later when he was eleven, Eminem was introduced to rap music through his uncle. He fell in love with the way the rappers were able to express themselves, something he could not do because he was a quiet and introverted child, and the beats. He has said many times that rap gave him an outlet and motivated him to stand up for himself. As a teen, Eminem listened to a lot of gangster rap. Gangster rap is a violent style of rap where rappers rapped about killing people and committing crimes. Obviously, Eminem was not the first and only person to rap about violence. Artists such as Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls and the rap group NWA all rapped about violence long before Eminem came along. Violence is as big a part of hip hop culture as rapping itself. It is not something to be proud of, but it is a fact.
Eminem's misogyny is a result of bad family dynamics and his relationship with his ex wife, Kim. Eminem's mother was very unstable and suffered from Munchhausen’s syndrome. Munchhausen’s syndrome caused her to believe that her son was sick when he really was not. As a result of this delusion, she often fed him pills The relationship between Eminem and his mother was stormy at best. The pair had many arguments and they often ended with Eminem being kicked out of the house, even in winter. This interaction most likely set up more problems with women in the future. Eminem and Kim also had a volatile relationship. They often cheated on each other and Kim would beat him up. Instead of lashing out, Eminem would punch the wall or hit something else to vent his frustration. As a result of all this rage and heartache he wrote Kim, a very dark and angry song. Many people agree that it is the darkest of all of Eminem’s songs. The song was about killing his ex wife. This song is very hard to excuse, even for big fans. Although, one positive thing can be said about it: it was healthier to vent his feelings in a song than to actually kill someone.
Eminem's homophobic lyrics are not actually meant to be homophobic. Marshall grew up in urban areas where people often used homophobic language to indicate that a person was weak. Many people tend to think that just because he used these words, he hated gay people. If he was truly homophobic, would he perform with Elton John? Maybe, if he was just trying to give the critics something to talk about. A better question would be, would he still be friends with Elton John today and call him every week? No, he wouldn't. Additionally, homophobic language is very common in rap. Rap is about artists proving their masculinity and never appearing weak.
Eminem is a cultural icon. Many people look up to him and are influenced by him. This worries other people because they can't see that his lyrics, however offensive, are simply artistic expression. They also only see Slim Shady the violent, loud and vulgar character. They don't see Marshall ,the quiet and caring person behind Slim Shady. Many people think Eminem parties a lot and does drugs, but they are very wrong. Eminem likes to stay home and take care of his daughters and record songs in the studio. He used to do drugs, but he has been sober for six years now. Marshall has not had the easiest time in life, and his bad experiences tend to spill over into his lyrics.
