I think our muisc is a recorded part of a wide range of people. I dont think that rap music necessarily can have a bad effect on kids, because if someone wants to promote carrying a gun or gangbanging etc then they probs would of done it anyway, like through talking with ppl in the pub or something like tht, so the rap just allows more people to hear it. I dont think its an excuse from people to say that they do something because say 50 cent talks like its something to be proud of e.g. "I'm a gangster and I'm proud of it". Despite this, I do feel in some ways rap artists should be slightly more responsible in what they encourage, however money and fame are often theyre main goal, so if our culture demands masculunity in the sense of agression and leadership in a crime sense, then we can't lay the blame soely on the artists. I listen to rappers that talk about stuf like "Bring it on, we right here (DMX)" and I rate the tracks highly and wouldn't walk out on to my street and say it to people so I don't this type of thing does have a bad influence but maybe it does to some people I duno. Another idea is that I've seen people like in my area use music as a means to get theyre agression up if u get me, like wen they are waitin in a 4x4 with a gang about to do bad shit to people, they roll up with hit em up or like whoa or something, u get me? So maybe it does have a influence, even if it is to only boost someones ego and confidence temporarily. I think its important to say that they'res alot of stuf in our rap music that has a positive influence on kids aswel tho, like dmx, nas, rakim, 2pac, mob deep have all conveyed very positive messages in much of they're music. So, in conclusion it seems to me like how we behave as a community, local and worldwide, depends on our (sub-) cultures, and music alone, although a potentially masively powerful tool for message-conveying, can definately not be soely blamed for any problems kids may encounter in theyre current and later lives.
