Music videos during the MMLP2 era

Postby Gothamshady » May 19th, '14, 18:17

There have been great videos from this album. However, none of them have been really mind blowing. None of them has had me say 'oh shit, this is a classic, this is going to change hip-hop forever ect.' There hasn't been a video where it tells a story and is meaningful.

Berzerk was a party anthem so I guess it doesn't give the music video a chance to do that. Survival - self explanatory. The Monster was great. It was great, nostalgic, but not mind blowing.

I hope Headlights wasn't the final single off the album. There are many singles on the album with potential to make a fantastic music video with a storyline; Rhyme or no Reason, Legacy, Bad Guy, Asshole or even So Far etc

Only realistic option left is him to release So Far. Has loads of potential. I didn't say Bad Guy because if he was going to release that as a single, why hasn't he done so already? Why wouldn't he release it as the first single?

Lose Yourself

That music video did not change hip-hop forever, sorry. If we had gone without it, I'm pretty sure hip-hop would be in the same state as it is today.

I think it's a fantastic song and I do recognize its worldwide reception but I still wouldn't say it changed hip-hop. What was different about hip-hop the year before LY and the year after?

Stopped reading after ''This is going to change Hip Hop forever''. :confusion:
Fuck top five, bitch, I'm top four
And that includes Biggie and Pac, whore
And I got an Evil Twin
So who the fuck do you think that third and that fourth spot's for?

I'd say the ''Rap God'' video is kinda mind-blowing.

Mind-blowing is probably an over-statement but, definitely brilliant. And I'm surprised by the lack of visual praise for it; the Matrix homage concept to convey Em intaking and learning from all of rap's history, as it plays on the screens and he shouts it out, comments on it etc. / all adding up to a rap god is fly as fuck.

Then you have the Max Headroom shit and Em's hilarious facial expressions, which is the first example of Em being sarcastic and silly but not corny or cheesy... maybe ever actually. Because even in his prime, he was sarcastic and silly, but it was always kind of intentionally... corny, it's not like it was visually brilliant or felt like Em was truly comfortable in his own skin. It was just him being really stupid like a 10 year old.

But in the Max Headroom shit - doesn't feel the need to have to 'be a rapper' with hand movements etc., he's just expressing those badass lines as if they're dialogue to a script, and the way it's all chopped up like it is adds to the manic, chop and change flow and feel of the song. Matches perfectly.

Then you have that supersonic speed part, visually brilliant, and also when he's rapping against himself, like he's a school teacher telling himself off, wagging his finger n shit.

It's one of his best videos ever. There's a lot going on but it feels really well done visually.

Also, I think the ''Berzerk'' video is pretty visually classic and also has a dope concept with the whole Beastie's homage vibe. And is quite innovative and experimental in spots. Definitely a step-up.

I think MMLP2 vids have been some of his best. But then ironically, you have ''Headlights'' which is one of his all-time biggest fails of a video, and it's directed by a world class film director. LEL.

 Just ignore the 'changed hip hop part' lol. Hope you get what I mean. As in a video that just completely blows all the other music videos made thus far out of the water.
