I was under the impression that the entire song was a dream. And he wasn't even dying during that part of the dream.

No it's just incredibly lazy and poor song writing. Emotion ≠ good when the emotion is about as deep as a puddle. There's nothing even remotely noteworthy or interesting that happens in When I'm Gone. Anyone in the creative writing section could have written it and it can't be saved by technical prowess either like most of Eminem's bad lyricism because it was written in the pill days

"When I'm Gone" is way better than "Mockingbird" but both are still shit. The latter in particular is like an updated, muuuch shittier version of "97 Bonnie & Clyde"...the only good part of that song is when he swears at the end and laughs.
