Where the fuck did "eh" come from and why is it so contagious?!

I think "Eh" is more common in the east and not so much in the west. I have no idea where eh came from, It's the same reason California valley girls say "like" and Mexicans say " g'uey."

Well theres that then haha. My moms cousin in Canada says it every other sentence it made me want to when I used to talk to her.
