Everyone's response to those who aren't necessarily for the challenge is how it raises all this awareness and how we're just assholes who have no friends; we're just bitter because no one's challenged us. That may be, but how many people who do the challenge actually look it up and understand what they are raising awareness for?

The cynic in me--or I guess the realist--sees the unavoidable presence of these challenges on social media as more of a "hey, look at me, I'm supporting this disease that I know nothing about. But I'm a good person for doing so. Oh, by the way, I certainly don't mind all the "likes" i'm getting for posting this video."

Don't get me wrong, the surge in donations for ALS is great, but I can't help but see the faults behind the motives.

$31.5 million in donations to the ALS association so far, it's fuckin' great and I wouldn't care if a 1000 pathetic person is doing it only for the "likes".

Like I said, it's great that this trend has led to such a surge in donations.

But how can you just be okay with all of this "raised awareness" being predicated on getting attention and likes on Facebook? I know it's hard to believe, but I can almost guarantee--what with knowing a majority of the people i'm friends with on Facebook--that very few of those who participate actually understand what they're "supporting."

No, for most of the people, it's so that they can show the people they know that "hey, I'm a good person, I really care about this…Oh, and I happened to get 87 likes in the process." It essentially proves the fundamental issue with social media.

In reality, a majority of those people don't even know what the fuck ALS is.

Even if only 1 in 10 people posting or viewing the videos researches and understands the cause, that's still thousands of people becoming aware and possibly donating. The end result is increased donation and awareness, I can't see any downside man.
