Did the singles do MMLP2 justice?

Postby Mr Evil » Sep 5th, '14, 13:56

I really don't think so in a way. Berzerk & The Monster were excellent choices and did extremely well in the charts but the rest have just not really amounted to much and are rarely - if ever - played on the radio

Imagine:
Berzerk
Brainless
The Monster
So Far...
Bad Guy

It would've surely been fucking incredible and reached out to way more "casual fans" Ps. I know Rap God is an amazing song but I still think it was a bad choice for a single and I haven't heard it on the radio once.
Just sorta seemed like the singles almost let the album down...Especially Headlights

Rap God was an amazing choice for a single. Of course it didn't/doesn't get played on radio, look at the song length. It was a breakout success for the not-so-typical radio rap song and opened public eyes to what makes Eminem so different. He essential broke the genre once again.

Berzerk was so infectious it would've been a sign for it to have been an album track (and, admittedly, it isn't that impressive lyrically to not waste on a single) and The Monster..well, I shouldn't have to explain that.

Headlights was the key emotional song that only made sense to be a single (although I'd say Paul had something to do with him releasing it as a single, can't imagine Em was that open to the idea--maybe not).

So Far... would've did good but I don't think it would've been that successful due to the lack of a cohesive hook or structure.

Brainless would have been a great song for a 4th or 5th single, imo. It is a very relevant social commentary in the same vein as some of Em's old classics where he just lashes out on critics/media.

Bad Guy is the real gem that should be released as a single, much like it's partner track Stan was. If anything, we deserve the fanservice to have a music video make this song. Imo it's an essential part of closing the MMLP arc, but I guess that's up to Em...

Brainless is not radio material at all.

Rap God is a genius song and was a great choice for a single, and brave. Also, the video >>>>

Berzerk is fun and funky as fuck and it's hard NOT to jam to it when it comes on, it's actually kind of got better with age which is weird as immediately it felt like a weakish retreat into silly single territory.

As for the Monster... meh, does its job.

Survival is dope but like Monster is Recovery 2.0. Those songs are what Recovery should have been.

Either way, I think Rap God truly feels like MMLP 2.0; the vibe, attitude... and then everything else is on another fucking level and the shit is a mad ass trance of brilliance.

EM picked great singles.
Just because Rap God didnt get played on the radio doesnt mean shit,it blew up the fucking internet when it dropped, exellent choice of single.

Berzerk and The Monster was good choices too,but i would have picked Legacy instead of Headlights though.

Like most of the other people who posted I think Em picked good singles that had commercial appeal even though I don't like Berzerk that much. Rap God was the perfect song to get everybody hyped for MMLP2 as that reminded everybody why Eminem deserves to be in the G.O.A.T conversation

Was going to give my own perspective, but everyone who posted prior pretty much echoed my own sentiments... so yeah haha great singles. Especially Rap God :y:

I think what he chose were all good choices except for ''Survival'', it didn't belong on the album either. ''Headlights'' unfortunately had his worst video ever though.
Fuck top five, bitch, I'm top four
And that includes Biggie and Pac, whore
And I got an Evil Twin
So who the fuck do you think that third and that fourth spot's for?

Overall the choices were good but IMO

Should have gone
1) Berzerk
2) Bad Guy
3) Rap God (about 2 weeks before album release date)
4) The Monster
5) Headlights

No Survival single. Have Berzerk and especially Bad Guy create crazy hype for the album, then take that hype to the next level by dropping Rap God like 2 weeks before the release, shit woulda been so crazy. Fuck a Survival and a COD collab. Also I'd rather they released something besides Headlights if Em wasn't comfortable releasing it, if the idea being that it was more d Paul/Interscope/Etc. wanting that to be a single with the Nate hook and all that and Em not wanting it to be because of the subject matter, maybe that's why we have the music video we do, cuz Em really wasn't interested in doing it. Could have replaced it with So Far... maybe?

Releasing Bad Guy as a single before the album dropped would've taken away from the song's element of surprise when you first pop the cd in.

If anything, it could've been released as a single after the album dropped.

I know and it did make for an incredible first listening experience and I figure that's why it wasn't released beforehand as a single. Although I still think the hype it would have created hearing it for the first time as a single would have still been huge and still been a surprise, might have been worth it? With it being a single it probably would have gotten even more (mainstream) attention than it did. Imagine having only heard Berzerk, Bad Guy, and Rap God before hearing the album. I dunno just a thought, like I said I'm pretty satisfied with the ones they used besides Survival, even if the ending of the video was epic....they cuda put that ending on any video.

The payoff of hearing Bad Guy when you first popped in MMLP2 was magical. Releasing it as a single before the album ruins that.
