Em looked cool as fuck here.
Finally fought his way back to fluidity. Took a while but he looks natural and rhythmic again, just more deliberate and less loose as he's less high or drunk lmao.
But he's now embodied the hyperness of SSLP-era, the anger/drama of MMLP-era, the showmanship and theatrics of TES-era, precision of Relapse-era and the rock-boom of the Recovery-era.
Also:
- Amazing how he still feels exciting and fresh to watch. Who the fuck achieves that after 15 years. Not many.
- And how the fuck doesn't he look stupid as a 42 year old white man rapping? Just shows how obsessed with hip-hop he is, like, really how obsessed. Only a man that obsessed with something could not look stupid doing it at this point.
Also... his 'Monster' verses are badass and this was a great performance. That new twist shit he's doing is dope, I'm digging the new performance additions including the anger stomps... seems like he's been trying to create a new combination of physical drama since coming back but it always seemed-off until now. Now it feels like some of his moves and ideas are really connecting when trying to make a point with his lyrics... mainly just anger as Eminem is walking anger lmao but when he says something and double stomps it like FUCK YOU, the shit works, he's definitely finding cool ways to stay physically exciting to propel his lyrics even further.
More artists should take visual theatrics into mind too and I also wish Em would do more than just rap with a cool outfit with a band now though. I wish he'd think more in the line of MMLP Chainsaw and Mask era, dam - MMLP2 era too... this would have been the perfect time to re-adopt some of that total movie-like stage theatrics in a menacing way, especially for "Rap God". I know he did for "Bad Guy" with the video (which looked fucking dope) but come on Em, be better. Diggin' the all black get-up though - looks dope.
ALSO - even though I'm still pissed off at the song and others being on MMLP2 and even the cheese of 'Not Afraid', they do still have an affect when you see them like this and feel big and great and it's almost like despite him not making another classic and us sometimes like 'wtf are you doing Em!' - you can kind of see bits of a masterplan come together, metaphorically; not saying he's got some pre-determined masterplan lol but I mean that in the sense that the pieces to the puzzle shown individually like this are pretty remarkable.
Adding to that, this performance and MMLP2 in general I think has been about him trying to basically epitomise every style of rap song. I mean he somewhat implied that anyway in his admiration of Rubin and essentially saying he wants to be like a rap yoda kinda thing - and with MMLP2 you can see it. That is why it is uneven and frustrating but the songs on their own merit... feels as if he was trying to create the ULTIMATE version of certain rap style combinations aka:
SURVIVAL - ULTIMATE RAP/ROCK STADIUM SONG - Fucking thumping, pure aggressive lyrics, big, loud, scary and trashy (cliche yet effective) rap-rock beat, pure entertainment lyrics and a big glossy hook: BOOM.
RAP GOD - ULTIMATE SHIT TALKING/RAPPIDY TRACK - Outstanding wordplay, great punchlines, amazing flow, ingenious delivery; patterns, cadences, voices, superb lyricism and back-to-front wow factor. As if he was trying to create the all-time 'look at me I can rap well and fuck you' track.
THE MONSTER - ULTIMATE POP/RAP MIX - Not using the word pop there as a diss... that's just what that style is that Rihanna is using and the beat falls back on, and Em can't complain about being called pop and then merge himself with a hook and beat like this lmao. Regardless, I dig the track anyway, the verses are fun as fuck and also seems again like the kind of epitome of 'big catchy hook' vs aggressive introspective rap lyrics.
BERZERK - ULTIMATE THROWBACK FUN RAP TRACK - Loud, absurdly catchy and in your face and OTT Beastie-sounding. Total nonsensical shit talking track of course, the hook is a pure party-rap hook and totally unashamedly so also... old Em would have been more reserved and commented on his own awareness of the party-aspect and not fully confirm to it or something where as on here he's blatantly just like KICK YOUR SHOES OFF!!! LET YOUR HAIR DOWN!!!, Old Em wouldn't actually embrace a theme that full-on before, there was always a total undertone of 'I'm better than this', here he just embraces it and smashes it.
Could go into more depth about the other tracks too but I'm bored now.
But yeah, this theory kind of fits with Nate saying it's Em's last album - I don't think it will be but I do think Em made it with that in mind as in 'if I don't make another album, I want MMLP2 to be the title which holds this material which is the EPITOME of each style' just to try and gain props and both approval/disapproval from every angle... which... actually - when you think about it, was the concept of MMLP, to just embrace criticism as well as combat it and to be a confusing mind-fuck of 'Fuck you, I don't mean it, or do I?'.
I don't think it quite works for MMLP2 but I do think he had an aim of creating the ULTIMATE X track in case this was his last and he could just perform these songs to leave a lasting impression in each 'sub-genre' of rap.
Also, the fact he's used the word epitome more than a few times lately is maybe a bit of an indication he's had that in mind as shows he would have been thinking of the word a lot.
DAM, Base back on his crazy theory shit son. This 2009 or what? Nostalgia Bro.
All this MMLP2 chatter got me hungry for some MMLP2 son. Finna spin it now, shit is fun as fuck.
