Asp if you have a song you think is a more all round rap song, or is on the same level, please name some, I want to hear them. Another thing I think about Lose yourself, which is very important in it's impact, is the way every verse gets better as it goes on especially the last verse, the way Eminem speeds up his flow to a crescendo, it's the perfect climax to a great song.
Asp I know what you're saying, and believe it or not I agree with ya, you are protecting the old school hip-hop, the underground, the classics, the greats, all the other brilliant head bobbing rap songs we love. I`m just wondering if there's a more complete rap song, that's all.
I got the same vibe from songs like:
Virtuoso - "the reaper"
Pete Rock and Cl smooth - "T.R.O.Y" and "Skins"
Gangstarr - "just to get a rep"
Rakim - "mystery(who's god)" - i know you heard that one, and i personally thing, that song is so deep that if one actually listenes to it to understand it, itll give him goosebumps.
MF Doom - songs like "accordion" .. no hooks, no samples that are to melodic... plain rap, but Doom is a rapper that many people will only understand after sometime, not because he lacks something in the songs, he's just a bit ahead of time and too far back in time all in the same.
Snoop Dog - "whats my name" i know the song aint exactly a lyrical masterpiece, but i know uite a lot of people that had been impacted by that song.. including me.
Rakim - Know the ledge, i cant find one bad thing to say about the song, and i definately cant say it didnt make me loose my mind wen i first heard it.
The only possible lack (but it isnt to me) is the quality .. as in mixing/mastering, songs that come booming from the underground, rarely have the budget needed to blet to perfection.
Redman- "how to roll a blunt", a classic party song. Anyone who actually blazed a fat blunt late at night, while listning to redmans first albums, will know what im talking about.
Big daddy kane- "set it off" or "cause i can do it right"
these are just some i can think about right now, those songs, that ill bump along side with lose yourself any time.
As many have mentioned, i don't see an "ultimate" ever happening, simply because people have their own tastes. thats what music is about. People who got into listening to hip hop at the time 8-mile came out, will see it from a whole other perspective. Plus i take into account that every year, a song can get more complex (well not with 2006'th hip hop scene, but in general) with time, its like technology, every year shit gets better.... its all ultimates every year, and thats why saying that a song like that could be rather biased, since logically theres just NO ULTIMATE.
As a listener, i can definitely say it honestly that i don't always listen to how complex something sounds, i cherish the art in optimizing a song for its needs.
