How important is Windows Defender?

How important is Windows Defender? There is a file called MsMpEng from Windows Defender, and it sucks away so much CPU, it's driving me mad :S sometimes even up to 100% of the CPU!!!
Is Windows defender so important that I have to have it on the pc, or can I just throw it the fuck away and get rid of that slow computer?

Throw Windows Defender in the container n you'll be a much happier man, I promise.
