^ agree with asp, there is no "best"

even if there was, eminem is not the best. listen to Rakim, Common, Nas... etc. i would easily put Eminem in my list of best 5 rappers, but not the best. but he did introduce new shit to the rap game:
1. first and only white rapper to reach a great success (vanilla ice was gay).
2. his lyrics are great, rhymes and complexity are perfect.
3. he has his unique style. i havent heard another rapper that sounded like him before he came out.
and the list can go on and on.

still, listen to other rappers and ull find better than him
"Hard hearted beast with a jaw full of meat
Engulfed in a feast while you starve at his feet
He toss you the least little portion of a piece
To the floor and expect you to rejoice when you eat" - Brother Ali

Because eminem has been on the scene for like 5 years, only time defines a legend. You cant tell what imprint eminem will leave on the future generation.

edit: and i aint saying he hasnt done anything great, he has. Im saying that impact is judged with time.

eminem is not the best. neither is rakim, nas, jay z, tupac, etc. you can't have a BEST in hip hop. you can have a favorite and have a personal BEST on your list, but to come to an agreement on who the best is is just impossible.

i think tash is just asking why he isn't CONSIDERED the best. not why he's not the best, but why he's never put in the same categories as other rappers. it's like the same thing em said on till i collapse when he listed a bunch of MC's that he thought he should have been associated with. it was his subtle way of saying that he's just as good as these people.

and people are recognizing that. i have seen him been put on TOP 10 or TOP 5 lists. whether its from fans or critics, people are noticing that em deserves to be placed among the elite. why he's ain't ever consdiered the BEST? maybe cuz he's white... or maybe it's cuz he's commercially popular. it's probably both. look at the kids here. no one wants to give em credit no more, cuz he's so damn popular with "the groupies". it's bullshit, cuz he can't help that.

y'all are wack for trying to say em is just another rapper, who hasn't done anything for hip hop. i consider jeezy or buck or even ludacris as just another rapper. but how can you say em hasn't done anything for hip hop? just being white gave made an impact on hip hop. his "lyrical content", his videos, the way he rhymed. i'm not trying to sound like some dick rider (which i'm pretty sure some people are going to think  ), but it's the truth. i dont' care if em quit rap today, and never put out a decent song, he's made his mark in hip hop, and he'll be remembered.

finally someone who gets what i'm saying, and yea i asked this question when i was listening to the second verse of till i collapse..

good post, exactly what i was asking.

yea time needs to be passed before he becomes a legend, hasn't he been in the game for like 8 years?

Eminem has done special things, but let's change this topic a lil bit, who thinks he'll become a legend?

a generation needs to pass.

when the people on this board grow up, and raise their children and tell they kids that they used to listen to eminem cds in their basement wen they were kids.

You're devaluing the word "legend" itself. And i think a legend is for your consideration only, not like it matters what the rest think.

I agree with Asp and Tru - Em has the potential to become a legend due to the fact that he is a highly skilled rapper with amazing lyrics (with a few exceptions of course) and an amazing flow, and i actually do think he's contributed with something new to the game, I don't think rap would've surged to the forefront of the music scene and become "popular" music if there hadn't been an Eminem (whether I like the fact that this has happened is quite another matter).

But Em's not been in the business long enough to be considered a legend yet, that's what separates him from the likes of Pac, Biggie, Rakim and Nas - and I don't care what the rest of you say, Ra's the best :p

i don't mean to be nitpicking here, but could you pls try n spell at least remotely correctly since there's a lot of non-English speakers here who won't get a word you say - dad's a person, not a function word e.g. - it's ok 2 use abbrevations, but why has the letter t almost gone missing from your vocabulary?

The problem is that he is amazing and he gets recognition for it, so of course 90% of people naturally assume he is overrated for this reason.

I wouldn't say he's a legend, but he is definately one of the best. Just because he's been recognized for this fact dosen't make it less true.

and, i got into rap music listning to snoop dogg, religiously, 8 years ago. That doesnt mean snoop dogg has done something outstanding to rap music.

Frankly, ive seen no good effect appart from commercialising rap (which isnt really that good). As a rhymers he's great and im sure he'll be remembered, just later.

You people need patientce, its not like him being considered by a majority of mediocre fans of the genre wont do nothing to the way u listen to his music.
