ya know... being a legend doesn't just mean having great rhymes. that's a big part of it, but there's other factors that you have to calculate. look at ll cool j. does he make classic albums anymore? does he show his lyrical skills? not really... but he'll go down in history as an icon.

yes , because thats an effect on the culture and as has been said a thousand times, that can only be determined with time.
as far as the commercial success goes... every legendaery rapper has to have at least some commmercial success. i remember asp laid out the 5 fine things a classic album should have in another thread, and it said CHANGE, and if you don't have any commercial success, you're not going to change anything.

Indeed, but change to positive or good? sometimes rappers can change music to worse, regardless of how good an album is. And [personal opinion]MMLP for example was commercially successfull just because of the rebelious commercial image eminem was juiced up with [/personal opinion]

so i disagree to some extent about sales not meaning anything in hip hop... sure, they don't define talent, they never will, but that doesn't mean they don't play some factor. the underground rapper that no one has ever heard of is not going to be come a legend without some commercial success.

nope, thats the problem with music, i know rappers that barely went gold and are legends *points at Mecca & the Soul Brother LP by Pete Rock and CL*

Its those kind of passionate individuals that sacrifice pop success for love for music that actually change its essense, the rest change masquarade the culture in the spotlight.

EDit: im saying all this simply coz i wanna point that we are all jumping ahead of time. kinda rediculous. the topic should be worded better.

wow...so no one remembers the Marshall Mathers LP. I think that album should be considered legendary; it had a major impact on me. he's a memorable artist for more than just album sales.

eminem's music is heartfelt and true to the average american lifestyle. people are upset about their social class, feel hopeless, and sometimes have family or marital issues.

im not saying sales are everything but if your talking about making records books, hes gonna be there.
