"Still Liking The Old Forum A Whole Lot More" Thread

Postby matz » Jun 29th, '07, 20:18

ok i thought its a free country (atleast where i live) so i should say whats been bugging me recently.....and its the new forum

i find myself not visiting the site so often anymore because its simply not as accesible as the old forum.....yeh the main bit i miss is the new topics link but there is just something else about the old forum that drew me to trshady ahead of all the other eminem/rap forums out there.....it was easy to navigate and real clean......i no tr put a lot of effort into upgrading to the new forum and it was the obvious step to take......but i'm just worried that potential new members might not find this forum as friendly or as distinctive to others anymore and that current members also have similar opinions on the new forum (i no atleast one has....not mentioning any names)

im not being disrespectful to tr or anyone whos put a lota effort into trying to make this forum better.....its just weather its worked or not

Edit: Thread back open, changes coming tomorrow or soon after

There's a few changes coming to the layout tonight, fairly minor but it's all a step towards making things more slick and simple. I thought at the time that the new features of PHPBB3 were good enough that I wanted to get it out there, there were no skins so I had to make this rather then use the default.

Either way, I'm locking this till the changes are put in place tonight but it will be re-opened then.
I respect your option Matz and I'ma do what I can to keep everyone happy.

It's not locked Tr :D

Only delay i`m noticing is when I finish writing a message and hit the "post reply" button, a fairly high percentage of times it will take a lil while to load that little submitted message window. It is annoying and slows ya down a bit. In the modern world, everyone wants to do everything faster and it's now now now. It's only a few second delay, but on the internet it feels like a few minutes.

Also, 2 more things: where I start writing my post too quickly, and look up and find i`m not even in the box anymore, is still very annoying, and not opening a link in a new window, I haven't yet got into the habit of right click and open in a new tab, so it can still be pretty annoying.

The forum has been a bit boring lately for me, not because of the new changes, but because it isn't as active as it was a month or two ago, maybe what Mats says is true, and people are posting less because of it?

it might be the summer too. holiday started and people don't spend much time at home, so that could be the very reason for less active forum aswell. :sweating:

Dude, we all have opinions, i don't like this one as i liked the old either, though i can deal with spammers easier with this new software, sort out warnings, bans (especially that i dont have to ban nobody permanently and the spammer bots which i had to log on 3 times a day to delete and ban manually every day are gone. It makes it easier for us mods and Admins to control the forum.

The design is not final, theres just no skins decent enough available at the moment, but we looking for new ones and simpler ones. No matter how much you like the old one however, its best you get used to the fact that you are not gonna get the old one back since its old software. All forums are gonna switch to this one eventually just like computers switch operating systems (some might like windows 1998 better for example, but guess what its no longer safe or supported), we did it earlier to work with it and get to know what users want from it and how to make it more adaptable.

Besides, according to first opinions which were posted, majority liked the change, so both kinds of users have to make compromises... ya dig?

@ 4D

I suggested the exact same thing to TR about a week ago and i fully agree, i see no sense in confirming that u wanna see the post u made, i think its obvious, if one wants to go back to index itll take em the exact same time to load straight to the post they made and hit the index button.

@Yoshi

Yeah, that could be it, and many other factors, like nothing meaningful or interesting to post or discuss. I was just saying it was a possibility and maybe just a contributing factor.

@Asp

Good point man, 'cos I wasn't even talkin about you were sayin. I was just saying that the space between pressing the "submit" button and the "Submit Message" window popping up, is slow loading sometimes, and is a hint for me that maybe the forum is slower, and if it is, I can only imagine the headache some people on Dial-up are having, because i've broadband and it's fast as fuck. Good point on that "Submit Message" window, let's get rid of that and bypass right to your post, then if we don't wanna read our post, it's easy to hit "index" or the correct sub-forum we want to go to. I`m not sure if this option is available for phpbb, I remember I had it on my invisionfree.com forum.

yeh i get your point and maybe it does make it much easier for admin but if there are no skins and add ons available at the moment then it would have probs been best to update when there were....your example of win 98 to xp is a bit weak cos that was an obvious upgrade in quality in features....this doesn't seem to be obviously better.......im just saying if i was a new guest visitng this forum now....i would not join it instead of any other forum....i would have before (and i did).....i just fear other potential new members may feel the same way.....

but if the upgrades are coming thats great :8)

It takes time to get used to the new board, we have a chance to experiment and learn on the beta. Plus prior to the change people wanted more features all the time, this new board filled a lot of feature requests.

....your example of win 98 to xp is a bit weak cos that was an obvious upgrade in quality in features....this doesn't seem to be obviously better.......

Well there are MANY new features on this board that the previous one didn't have, I see no wrong in wanting to use them.

im just saying if i was a new guest visitng this forum now....i would not join it instead of any other forum....i would have before (and i did).....i just fear other potential new members may feel the same way....

Nah, see your a member for a long time, you got used to the old board layout, it changed and you're just not used to it, a new member wouldn't know the old layout and might find this one to be good enough, might also like the features.

I honestly don't see that it is that monumentally bad, just different, we know that u can't always satisfy 100% of the people. As me and TR said before though, if you have suggestions in details to improve the board, you are welcome to post em, up to us to do what we can.

i like it. :8) been a member for more than 2 years now and i can honestly say i got used to the new one. it's easier to jump to other forums, and for me as a mod, it's easier to do my job here.

old one was white/grey, maybe that's the reason many people felt it was all clear. black color may make it bit more overhelming, but it still looks all nice and neat, so just give it some time guys. :b:
