As time goes by, there are worrying signs that Eminem is beginning to lose his sense of humour.
Lose Yourself, the first release from the soundtrack to Em's movie debut 8 Mile, sees the rapper firmly in preachy territory.
Like most Eminem singles, the backing is classy with a meaty guitar lick taking Em's arrangements to new heights.
But the major disappointment here is the lyrics - once Em's finest weapon - which pick up from much of the content of The Eminem Show in that it lectures us on how we can all be like him if we work hard enough. Yawwwn!
What happened to ripping into Christina Aguilera and being lewd about P.Diddy's girlfriends?
One of Em's catchphrases used to be 'lyrical content! lyrical content!' but on the evidence of this, that's exactly the area where he's running out of ideas.
This is a major tragedy - Em's success was built on his caustic wit and colourful delivery but this seems to have been slowly forgotten over time.
