this thought got inspired by an akala line that says something like "all the biggest selling artist of all time are the best artist of all time" (and the overall track I'm Gone lol)
and made me think, hes right, Elvis, Beatles, Eminem, Micheal Jackson (thriller era). and when you think of alot of artists that sell alot of records they are really talented, Amy Winehouse, Nas, Linkin Park.
Now you may just say "your ignoring the shit artists that sell" thats true but im talking about a different Audience.
before people sold loads of records because it had people who are really into music buying it and then people who only buy it for a listen/dance/sing along. Now it only has the later people buying it because its got worse. Really people focus on Hip Hop getting worse, but really overall all music got worse. and when a decent artist comes out with a track record of being great they DO sell numbers because the aduience that buy music for the music go buy it, sales are just down because there's less real music.
Everyone blames it on downloading instead of buying but really, when a Dope album comes out most people i know buy it, but when a bog standard album comes out but has big promotion everyone downloads and then everyone is like "everyone downloaded it no one buys records anymore" , the only difference if before people used to cater both the Music lover and the casual listner, now its one or the other and thats why the whole sales/downloading thing got affliated.
and on to underground sales, the reason these guys dont do big numbers isnt because there "slept on" or shit, its usually just because they aint got enough money to press enough Records or get enough promotion. but again when one of them do have the buisness plan to do good numbers they do it (akala, sway, plan B - UK sales wise there well known, and even known by american artists and people) coz the music lovers buy the shit and dont Download.
