Emadyville wrote:I see hip-hop as the whole, the dress, the style, the dj's, the clubs, the money, the alcohol, etc. I see rap as being part of hip-hop along with R&B and soul, maybe even jazz just because of the roots.

In regards to artists I think lyricism is rap (Em, Jay, Nas, Lupe, Luda, Pac, Big, etc)
And that's because rap is freestyling and battling, which all involves lyricism, punchlines, humor, rhyming, etc.

And in regards to hip-hop I see artists like- 50 cent, Dre, Jeezy, Wayne, etc.
This is because they seem to focus more on the culture then the actual lyricism shit, although they all have songs that would fit my idea of "rap", so it's obviously debatable.

There are obviously also some that will mix, at least in my mind. For instance Game has always been pretty lyrical but he's basically the definition of hip-hop too. That's why I think this is such a hard thing to define.

great topic :y:

And souja boy I consider exploitation of hip-hop.

i guess you hve covered the whole thing ,, ummm, ha nah , nothin to spit more .. enough said

i actually think hip hop and rap have a different beat.

rap is more gangsta and hip hop is more something you can dance too.
cuz like Mariah carey is half hip hop so it doesnt always have to be a rapper.
akon is also half hip hop and he more sings
so i think it is the beat of the music.

i just wanted to know how do you guys see the difference. for me it's like rap is just a kind of music, and hip hop is a culture, a movement, which includes rap, graffiti, breakdance, dj-ing, beatboxing and so on.. I think we r in the same boat. That's the way i understand both of them.

i always lol @ people who are like "well.. Usher ain't rap, he's hip hop" or "rap/hip hop artist, Eminem" - wtf :confusion:

dunno, that's just me. anyone's got a different point?

Somehow I haven't replied to this and if I have I can't find my reply. Well here goes.

The notion that hip-hop and rap are different styles of music is completely incorrect. Hip-hop is the culture that includes music, clothing, food, slang, and the race to achieve success. Rap is simply a part of hip-hop that can be further broken down into the categories that are being argued which is classic/old school (Run DMC, NWA), dance (Soulja Boy, DJ Unk), hardcore (Styles P), acid (Eshom), horrorcore (...I dunno... some old Three-6 Mafia), underground (what people seem to consider real rap), and commercial (which is everything combined into a marketed product, this is more or less the business end of rap).

So, simply put, to try to choose rap over hip hop would be like choosing the heart over the entire body. You can prefer that organ, but it's only a part of a larger organism, and on the other hand to accept the entire body would mean to accept organs you weren't fond of... like the liver or something. It's all packaged together.

This topic is fucking irritating. :shifty:

Just think about it.

-what do you do, you sing?
-no, I hip-hop.

Another:

-under what culture is breakdance?
-under rap

*brains running idle*

 Would it be so funny to just accept that hip-hop is the "culture" and rap is the rythmical argumentating by poetry or whatever the R.A.P came from. I'm too lazy to check with google... :shifty:

It's just awkward how lil gangsta kids are calling everything good rap and everything stupid hip-hop/RnB. That's just because they don't want to admit that some Christina Aquileras are rapping when they are. As if just rapping makes one a genius...

lol @ people who still claim that 'rap' is more gangsta than 'hip hop' after like 3 pages of discussing it and coming to a conclusion it is NOT?

hip hop is bigger than rap, it consists of more elements. it's a way of life, a culture, a style.. check out Guru's Jazzalude III - 'hip hop is the lifestyle, the philosophy, even the religion.. just as jazz had had it's own culture, rap music has it's own culture which we proudly call hip hop..
