Do Video Games Cause Violence?

Postby BlaqReaper » Dec 9th, '05, 01:50

Yeah so I'm pretty sure everyone has heard this argument before.
I remember hearing on the news this one kid stealing a car and shooting people, and all the events were similar to those that happened in Grand Theft Auto 3. Do you think games like those should be banned because of influencing too much violence?

Personally, I don't think video games cause the violence. I mean they are violent, but if someone goes out and kills people just because of a video game, they probably had problems waaaaayyyy before they picked up the game.

I don't think violent video games cause violence. How about a calm game like "A bugs life" If you play that, does that make you a bug? No. Its just a game, it doesn't cause anything to make you do something a game does.

I think that if you play violent games over and over again then they might have an effect on you because you become so accustomed to the strategies and aggression, but you must be slightly mentally unstable to believe it in the first place. There is always going to be someone who takes something too literally, it is like that with music and films also.

I can see your point. I've heard of (fromt the news) that gangs using video games as simulations for real life. Heavy violence can even desensitize someone.

An interesting fact, the (american) government may be even aware of video games influencing violence. There is this first persion shooting online game called American Army. It's free and still updated. The catch is that it's funded by the American Army in hopes that the game will give it more recruits.

Thats the thing, games are getting more and more like real life. Graphic's are improving, plots...everything. OK. So people shouldn't take a game so seriously but how can you blame them if they do?

I believe they are dangerous and somewat effecting people, but on the other hand, it might as well be reducing violence.

like in the old days ppl would shoot others for fun in real life, now they can let out their killing instinct in gaming.

Bullshit, if someone doesn't see the difference between real life and a video game, something's wrong with his psyche. Of course, 80% of video games is nonsense, they're addicting and so on, ppl just waste time and then live in their own zone like those freaks in Japan.. Nevertheless I think that they might be dangerous in some way, but you can't blame video games for making ppl violent.. You can't compare shooting aliens with real life, can you?

They don't cause voilence, they just encourage it

Video games are where you do what you don't get to do in real life, i.e. run a gang, play a hitman, outrun the police etc etc. Todays ultra-realistic gameplay/graphics/self-character involvement/roleplay in games just tends to imply that what you do in that video game is, has and will be happening in real life (which is true) and is acceptable in a moral society (which isn't). Hence they send out a mixed message, some people believing/accepting and then applying the not-so-good side of it in real life with dire consequences. So yes, video games DO play a MAJOR part in the growing voilence of todays youths.

(When did it become cool to be stabbed? to drop out of school? to 'mug' others? to do 'time'? ...sadly, thats the latest trend)

thats a hard topic to talk about !! I think its different for every person who is playin violent viedeo games !! every person reacts different !! I think they cause violence when a certain gruop is playing them !! I think video games who are realistic should be rated 17+ cuz a lot of kids are playing and can't divide between real and fantastic.
