Ok, yesterday, whilst downloading on interent ( as ye do), i accidentally knocked my brand new hard disk drive on the floor, the casing cracked open. Gutted doesn't even begin to describe how i felt. Tried reclosing the case and start again and now a message is saying i need to format it. That was supposed to be the BACUP in case the laptop fucked up. Is there any way of recovering ANYTHING cos all my projects, samples, torrents, pictures, backups of programs is on here?

chances are you now have what's called a "head crash" which renders the drive useless. the hard drive has platter (discs) inside of it that spin and little read/write heads that move across. if opened, even a dust particle between the read/write head and the platter can cause a crash. so dropping a hard drive can easily knock a read/write head out of place and render the drive useless. your only chance is to format.
