Rap is a music genre that at one time existed more for it's socially conscious themes, rather than commercial appeal. Originating from urban areas, lyrics about drugs, sex, guns, and violence were staples of the sub-genre, Gangsta Rap. As the genre grew in popularity, styles began to emerge that were in conflict with the original style, leading on to hip hop. As Rap was primarily comprised of lyrics, Hip Hop placed a greater emphasis on the music production, sometimes leading to a lack of substance in lyrics. Today, Hip-Hop/Rap exists as a mainstream genre, that--like most mainstream genres--is a diluted version of it's former self.
That might work a little better.
