Sorry to hear about your friend...

But yes, they are that bad. It's okay though, that's how most people's photo shopped shit looks like early on...they just haven't posted them online for everyone to talk shit on. It's all good man, you just need a lot of practice, but if you're a naturally creative person, you can make some great shit after you develop the skill. If you're not naturally creative, you can STILL make good stuff, but it may not be as awe-inspiring as some of our more gifted artists here on TR.
