"Lyrical" rhymes?

Postby TriRepo » Nov 2nd, '09, 19:41

Okay, I've been doing rap since the year 2000 and I'm still searching for the actual meaning for the term "lyrical" because everyone seems to have a different opinion...So, give me some thoughts: what makes lyrics "lyrical" in your opinion?

Is it what you say?
Or is it how you say it?
Or is the main thing, how much does the words rhyme?
Something else?

Is there any certain facts or is it all about opinions?

Replllllly pls :flower:

$(@TTY B@Y wrote:the perfect 'lyrical' song imo would be the following.

a good story/image portrayed, whilst rapping at a consistent flow, with good rhymes that contain lot's of multies WHILST still making perfect sense.

but that's just my opinion lol.

but when people say that a song is 'lyrically insane' i take that is meaning it had so many rhymes/multies. or maybe, the subject was insane? good question :y:

I agree with that. :y:

haha for sure...Well, my view is kinda same then, I haven't ever heard a single song in finnish (my native language) that actually has multies that make sense. I've always wondered is it only because of the language... Is it hard in english for a native speaker? :D

Oh, do you think that "comparison words" are lyrical? For example using "like" for a rhyme
"You getting knocked the fuck out like mike tyson"

I think it's usual for rap rhymes and I think they are actually kinda lame and boring rhymes?

Yeah, propably because it's one of the most developed languages in the world, lots of synonyms etc...?

That's called "simile" and it is pretty common in rap :y:

Ah yeah, forgot about similes.

I didn't even wanna read anyone else's posts so my opinion is not altered haha

But to me lyrical means this: multi's, strong vocab, great flow, delivery, and everything makes sense. I think you can have a solid verse, but a lyrically solid verse is better. That's my thoughts :y:

Lyrical is what some people above have said but for me, a song containing all those things is likely to be a boring song for me. When TOO many of those things are added it just goes over the top. Sometimes you like a bit of substance but not as much so that your brain explodes. :D

Yeah I definitely agree. Also, there's smart/street lyricism and there's nerdy/stupid lyricism. Smart/street lyricism is when you paint a smart picture and use metaphors, punchlines, multis etc. yet people can relate to it, and its balanced right, like its not TOO much, and obviously street because everyone has a certain amount of street understandings in them. What I can't stand is when you have a nerdy rapper kicking in words no one uses outside of science labs. That is not lyricism, that's just a rapper trying to be complex as possible and it comes out nerdish/fake/forced/try hard to me. And you have so many youtube rappers now a days, using that nerdish vocab trying to act street or act lyrical like anyone can relate to computers. Now a good song should have a good concept, people should be able to relate to it and it should also be executed smartly, but not in a nerdish way. Now which human fucking being can relate to this:

My diabolic homogeneous androgynous misogynistic fervor
Is like the ancient Egyptian encryption with an ante-diluvian inscription
i crack your fucking neck like a prehistoric cacophany & manhandle you
Biblical metaphysical propagation waves to dismantle you
Lexical masturbation, with words that can bring about your assassination
Vocabulary larger than the tectonic structure of your flagellation
Plant historical references in my raps to feign academic education
My dedication to herbal medication is a meditation on sedation
As long as my punch lines allude to zeitgeists in history
like the Area 51, African subsistence tribalism mystery
I'm a 16-year-old Canibus & my verbosity is my source of viscosity
Forcing unnecessarily complicated intergalactical aphorisms in my vocabulary

Using Amadeo's verse as an example because its the most retarded shit I've read in my life. That's what you call a nerd attempting Hip Hop, and if I remember correctly, Hip Hop is meant to be street smart, not that bullshit you just witnessed up there. And this is the only time where I agree with "RAP: Retards Attempting Poetry". No one wants to listen to a song and spend more than 5 minutes on checking what those words mean, cause that's not smart, that's stupid in terms of music.

Over a billion bullets shooting from the chopper's arm
