You've got Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk, Soul (I guess), Blues, Reggae, R&B if you're talkin modern, and probably more i can't think of now.

^Yeah the old soul and blues, people like for example O.V. Wright, Muddy waters, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge and Howlin' wolf. They were singing on the cotton fields about how bad their lifes were. When they moved to the cities people discovered they could actually sing, then Motown developed. With the real deep blues and soul music. Out of that Rock n roll, RnB, and eventually rap and hiphop developed.

Don't forget Harlem Renaissance era musicians: Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, Count Basie, etc. They were pretty important too.
