Judging solely on an individual song...

Postby Emadyville » Dec 5th, '09, 21:42

I was thinking about this the other day regarding, well mostly because this is an eminem forum, how he makes a lot of songs with the same subject i.e. Hailie, Kim, Debbie, first singles, killing, drugs, etc.

And I thought to myself we always compare a song about killing or whatever to a song he had previously done about killing, and so on and so forth.

Should we not just take an artist song for what it is, as in, someone does a song about love (doesn't matter the subject) and we should look at it solely as a song about love and judge it for how well that song did on that specific topic; and not compare it to previous work or even other artists song on the same subject.

I'm extremely curious to hear what you all think about this, now discus :y:

Why not comparing to previous work? That way you can see a artist develop his/her style.

My point was if you do that the song loses something, instead of looking it as an individual song you get caught up comparing it, that's all.

I agree, people tend to get stuck in the past. However, sometimes, when an artist brings out a type of song, which is decent, it's of course logical if you try to seek progress in the song in question and a previous song of said artist.

Yeah I see what you mean now. But even if you dont do it on purpose, when you listen to a certain artist for a long time, you wil always refer to past material in your mind. Even if you try not to, it is just that you have a certain expectation unconsciously.

I understandd the point of the question but if the artist is banging out the SAME shit for the most part, of course it'll be compared to similar work. If the song don't stand out then it pales to a better take of the subject, which is usually in the past
