Why Do More People Prefer Mainstream Hip Hop?

I think most of the kids at my high school don't know there's anything better. They listen to what's on the radio and they think that's all there is so they're used to it. Their standards are so low they think literally anything that comes on the radio is good.

mainstream music is way way way more enjoyable by many different people. I mean let's face it, Underground is known to be more "hard" how many chicks are gonna dig that type of music? not many probably..same with 12 year old kids, and same with grown ups who don't agree with fighting and shit like that. Plus mainstream is way more radio friendly, it's more accepted.

I listen to music for myself, but when I'm at a club I'm not just thinking about me, When I'm chilling with friends I'm not just thinking about me.

I listen to music for myself, but when I'm at a club I'm not just thinking about me, When I'm chilling with friends I'm not just thinking about me.

Where you're at a club, music is in the background, your main focus is girls and drinking. When you're with friends, music is in the background, and your main focus is to just chill with your friends, and do whatever it is you're doing with your friends. When you're by yourself, its all you, no one to argue about what song to play or what not to play, so that time, my friend you listen to music.

And that is the only time that music is really important, when you're by yourself.

@ Xray, dude, I respect you a ton as a non-ignorant hip hop head, but you seriously need to calm down and listen to his points.

As much as I love hip hop, mainstream, I can understand, is more listenable. That does not mean it is superior to any other form of hip hop, it just means it is more appealing to the ears first time around.

I'm not going to lie: hip hop is an acquired taste. To be honest, first time I heard DJ Premier on the boards, I wasn't impressed much; in fact, I was slightly disappointed. But of course this was around 13 years ago and my view is radically different now, and ironically, Premo is my favorite producer now.

@ Scott M, I doubt you'll truly understand the essence of hip hop unless you listen to it more with less restricted ears. You don't have to be "ghetto" to listen to old school. I grew up in a sheltered neighborhood in one of the richer, not to boast, areas in my nation. Doesn't mean I'm ignorant to the harsher realities of urban areas. I'm probably one of the very few in my neighborhood (when I was a kid) that loved hip hop. I simply adored it; studied it; listened to it constantly. I had other influences for music too though; I played the piano for approximately 13 years and the violin for 9, so I could appreciate classical music as well though.

my CW posts are the perfect example of it. writing stuff like that does not make the feelings go away, in fact, it probably makes them worse, 'cause it means i'm thinking about it even more

it's ironic though, when lesser known rappers rap about struggle, and not being able to pay the bills. yet, they claim that they'd reject a contract offer if presented with one. knowing that signing that contract would change his life. and his family's life. surely his family is more important than his pride? which leads me to believe that when people say they'd turn down a contract for millions, to rap mainstream stuff, they're actually lying to themselves.

Trust me, people who are in that particular situation dont really consider rappin as their only way out. People like that would take any offer they get.
Dont turn this into poverty talk. Just because some rapper is underground, it doesnt mean he's poor. He might not have millions, but he does have more than enough money. If he's any good, of course.
